Her mother was a rights activist. Her brother had schizophrenia and committed suicide, possibly while under the influence of drugs of abuse. At the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi she met her first husband: the architect Gerard DaCunha. Roy met her second husband, filmmaker Pradip Krishen, in 1984. Roy began writing her first novel, The God of Small Things, in 1992, completing it in 1996. In 2007, Roy announced that she would begin work on a second novel.
