Storage Space Issues Adding New Acquisitions to the Collection • The Libraries add 127,000+ volumes to the collection annually* *2009 ARL statistics • These do not include: • • • Volumes added to the Health Sciences, Law and regional library collections Microforms Electronic resources Consolidating Collections Music & Dance Library (MUS) materials being moved to the Science & Engineering Library (SEL) by Summer 2011 because of upcoming Sullivant Hall renovation Consolidating Collections Collections and services offered by MUS and SEL must be consolidated into existing SEL space Storage Space Issues • Space needed for new • • additions to the collections Book Depository (STX) storage facility is at capacity No additional storage likely to become available in the foreseeable future Physical Solutions • • Withdraw items from MUS, SEL and STX, applying the Libraries “Print Retention and Withdrawal” policy Transfer items from MUS and SEL to STX, as volumes currently at STX are withdrawn The JSTOR Project • Founded in 1995, JSTOR is a notfor-profit service that helps scholars, researchers, and students discover, use, and build upon a wide range of content in a digital archive of over 1,000 academic journals and other scholarly content. • JSTOR’s development was supported by the Mellon Foundation. About JSTOR • Purpose: A service for libraries to outsource storage of print journals • Goal: Archives multiple paper copies • Harvard and California Digital Library have print copies archived for preservation purposes • CRL (Center for Research Libraries) in Chicago) is also a print back-up site : OSU journal discards are sent to fill in CRL gaps ) JSTOR and the OSU Libraries • OSU Libraries donated $30,000 in 1997 to help develop JSTOR. • OSU Libraries purchased nine JSTOR collections at a cost of $116,575. • OSU pays JSTOR $58,000 annually for online access and outsourced archiving services.
