Emerging Solar Market in India
Pranav R. Mehta

Solar Market in India, 2012 Seminar

29th August, 2012
 JNNSM
targets 20,000 MW
Solar generation capacity in India
by 2020
 Some
of us target the Solar
Generation capacity at 55,000 MWs
by 2031-32
President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
on Renewable Energy
April 2006
 The
most significant aspect, would be
that power generated through
renewable technologies has to be
increased to 25% against the present
5%.
 It
would be evident that for true energy
independence a major shift in the
structure of energy sources from fossil
to renewable energy sources is
mandated.
Solar Energy

Solar energy in particular requires unique,
massive applications in the agricultural sector,
where farmers need electricity exclusively in the
day time. This could be the primary demand
driver for solar energy.

We also need to embark on a program in solar
energy systems and technologies for both large,
centralized applications as well as small,
decentralized requirements, concurrently, for
applications in both rural and urban areas.
 Large
scale solar energy farms of
100’s of MW capacity in certain
number could contribute around
55,000 MW

Carbon Nano Tube (CNT) based PV cell
expected to give a high efficiency of 50% as
against the present less than 25% for
conventional PV cells. Research mission
required.

“Rural household solar mission” which will
provide LED based Nano crystal lighting
system through small solar PV power plants
to 70 million rural households using
kerosene.
JNNSM – Phase 2

3000 MW capacity to be supported by the
Government of India

Additional 6000 MW is envisaged through
Solar RPO requirement

Requirement of solar power capacity by
2017 is estimated to be about 10000 MW.
Mandatory Solar RPO Mechanism

The Solar RPO has to begin with .25 % of
the energy procured reaching 3% by 2022

Successful Commissioning
 Despite
the difficulties and challenges
faced, ultimately success was achieved
and a total capacity of 605 MW was
commissioned by March, 2012 and was
dedicated to the nation by the Chief
Minister of Gujarat on 19th April, 2012
 The latest figure of commissioned solar
projects as of yesterday i.e. 25th April
2012 is 629 MW for Gujarat.

Success Attributed to




The success of 629 MW of Solar Power in 15
months can be attributed to :
Excellent Enabling provisions of Gujarat solar
Policy 2009 and Proactive role of the State Govt.
Whole hearted support received from the GOG
agencies like GEDA, GUVNL, GPCL, GETCO
etc.
Solar Developers bringing large investment of
Rs. 10,000 Cr [ 2.0 Bn], state of art technologies,
undertaking risk, and making all out effort pulling
no stops in meting the deadline

Future Solar Dreams
5
more Solar Cities and Solar Roof
Tops planned at Surat, Rajkot,
Bhavnagar, Jamnagar etc.
 More Canal based Solar Plants
 Affordable small power units for every
household and Farm
More Potential Areas for Solar Energy
 Much
improved solar energy storage
 Solar Desalination Plants
 Solar Green Buildings
 Solar and Wind Hybrid
 Hydrogen through solar energy
Constraints to be overcome for Converting
Future Solar Dreams to Reality
Land Availability – Solar Park initiative of
Gujarat needs to be replicated. Rajasthan
is already doing this.
 Grid Evacuation to be strengthened
 Finance to be made available at affordable
rates – priority sector lending.
 Govt. support to continue – we should be
together in converting solar Dream into
Reality.
 Higher Emphasis on R&D

Drivers for Future Solar
Dreams to Reality
RPO Enforcement – including for the
Captive Power Plants
 REC Projects to be Bankable – Innovative
Ideas
 Higher Emphasis on Off Grid as well
 A good admix of small and big projects

Space Solar Plans



Space Island Group (SIG) has been developing a
large financial fund with investors in Europe and
China for the past three years.
SIG will deploy several 3-5 MW solar power
satellite demonstrators into low Earth orbit in 2015
and 2016. SIG will also install a total of up to 20
receiving antennas in various nations around the
planet, in exchange for participation fees.
These demo satellites and antennas will allow
these nations to evaluate the safety and
performance of this energy source in a variety of
local environments.
Space Solar Plans




Between 2018 and 2050, SIG will assemble in
orbit a total of 1,000 of these large solar sats.
The energy for these sats will be sold in advance
at a fixed, guaranteed price of 5 Cents per kwh.
Contract preference will be given to nations who
participated in the solar sat demonstrations.
SIG's principal target market for this energy is
the Middle East, India, China, Japan and other
nations who will face energy shortages during
this time period.
Converting Solar Dreams to Reality

A very important step converting the solar
Dream into reality will be :
“ Accord the same priority as
Space and Nuclear Programs to
Solar Sector”
Converting Solar Dream to Reality
Increase the Solar Energy Budget
to 5 times the present Budget –
until Grid Parity is achieved
I am an eternal optimist and believe in the
slogan
“ Dreams Come True”
Thank You
