Experienced regatta sailors couldn’t measure speed loss using GPS. Mathematically EXTURN results in a maximum speed loss of 0.2 knots at 10 knots cruising speed. EXTURN creates less drag then tunnel thrusters – Why? The flow speed at the tunnel´s position is minimum twice as fast as at the bottom of the hull with EXTURN (see cross section of hull). This results in at least the fourfold retention force for a tunnel thruster which slows down the boat significantly.
