•Bells beach like most beaches has its good and bad days for surfing. On
its bad days the waves barely reach a foot high, but when its good it can
reach over 10 feet. The average wave height is between 3 and 6 feet.
• It has front waves and the best swell orientation is southwest.
• As far as wind goes its best is either north, northeast, or northwest.
• It is best to surf there at high tide.
• In the winter the water temperature is between 50-55 degrees
Fahrenheit and in the summer between 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit.
• So as far as what to wear I would go with a wetsuit in the winter just to
be comfortable and in the summer I think you would be ok with board
shorts.
• Bells is usually a warm place but can also have some colder moments.
In the year 2012 the lowest temperature was 10 degrees Celsius and the
warmest was 41 degrees Celsius.
•At Bells Beach seasons changing does not have much of an impact in the
world of surfing.
• The best swell is a southwest swell, the winds and swells are always
changing but it does happen to have a lot of south, southwest swells.
• Air temperature is pretty consistent throughout the year, put it this way in
January it can reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit and drop to around 50 degrees.
• The swells and winds change periodically throughout a day.
• On march 17th the air temperature was 60 degrees with the water
temperature being 66 degrees.
The swell periods change all the time at bells. The best swell
period is when its about 15 seconds and the most common is
around 10 seconds.
The Bathymetry at bells isn’t really that bad. It is mostly a flat surface
slowly getting deeper further out in the ocean. The only major problem
you can face is a short and very dangerous rock point known as the
button reef. It is a reef that splits bells beach from its neighboring surf
spot known as winkipop. Once you get far enough out to surf at bells
you wont have to worry about the button, its only when your paddling
out that you might face problems like getting swept on to it.
•Bells Beach is one of those places in the world where there is barely any
change from season to season. As I said before throughout the year it will have
90 degree weather as well as 40-50 degree weather. The temperature of the
ocean doesn’t change much either so it is hard to say when the best time to
travel is. If you are looking for a constantly warm area and warmer ocean
temperatures then the summer is best. But if you want to experience warm
summer temperature during most of the day and then fall like temperatures
towards night with average ocean temperatures the winter would be best for
you.
•The best boards to use at bells beach are small to medium sized boards.
•I have picked to go on a vacation to Bells Beach on April 1st to April 8th.
• Around this time round trip flights from Philadelphia international to
Melbourne, Australia(the closest airport to bells beach) would be around
$1800.
• Since the flight would take over 24 hours I would only be staying 5 nights.
• The best deal I found for a place to stay would be at the Bells Beach
Cottages which start at around $105 a night. So for five nights I'm looking at
close to $550.
• Just assuming I would spend at least $500 for daily expenses.
• Boards under 7ft could ship for $50, but over 7ft would be around $75.
• The good news is smaller boards are better at Bells.
• In the end I would say you would spend around $3,000 for one person to a
trip like this to bells beach.
Bells Beach is home to the longest active running surf competition in the world,
the rip curl surf & music festival. When the competition started in January of
1961 it was known as the Bells Beach Surf Classic. Eventually they changed the
name as well as the time it was held. They made it so it is around every Easter
each year.
