Student Council 2014-2015 What is Student Council? • The student council is an elected group chosen by their classmates to represent their grade and school. As a student council member, you are an ambassador – which means you are a leader among your peers. What does a Student Council Member do? • • • • • • • attend monthly meetings assist with helpful tasks ex. tour guide assist the PTA with fundraising events plan theme days collect secret donations helping to organize McKinley Events Organize other school activities. Student Council Roles * President- 5th grader * Vice President-4th grader * Secretary-4th grader th * Treasurer-5 grader * 2 Homeroom Representatives -3rd, 4th and 5th What qualifications do I need to be on the Student Council? • • • • • Expect Respect Member in good standing Regular attendance Grades exhibit exemplary effort Signed Nomination Papers submitted on time Be able to meet once a month AFTER school (3:40-4:30). (dates TBA) 1. What do I do first? • Sign the “ Interest Sheet” located in your homeroom to let your teacher know you are interested and you will receive nomination papers on Friday, 9/5. • Have your nomination papers signed by: – 5 peers – 4 educators at the McKinley – 1 parent • Turn your nomination papers to your homeroom teacher no later than 9/9 at 8:10 am. 2. Primary Elections • Primary Elections will be held in homerooms on Wednesday, 9/10. • Voters in each homeroom will choose 4 candidates to represent their homeroom in the Election. • Voters in grades 3-5 will choose 4 candidates for officers from grade 4 and grade 5. 3. How do I encourage people to vote for me? What is a persuasive essay? A persuasive essay is an essay in which you’re trying to convince your audience to support your point of view. You must state your point of view as your claim, support it with evidence, and explain how the evidence supports your claim. Political Speech Write a persuasive essay to convince the voters that you are the best candidate, state your claim and back it up with evidence to prove you are the best choice. Be enthusiastic! Timeline Nomination Papers Handed Out Distributed in homerooms – Friday, 9/5 Nomination Papers Due In homeroom by 8:10 on Tuesday, 9/9 Preliminary Election – Wednesday, 9/10 (In homeroom) Speeches – Friday, 9/12 Finalists for Homeroom Rep. make speech in homeroom. Finalists for President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer make speech in auditorium at 2:45pm Final Election – Monday 9/15 – in homeroom Results will be announced by the end of the day on Tuesday, 9/16
