Capture Solution

Charles N. McCoy

Academic Technology

1

Agenda

• Strategic approaches in evaluating various lecture capture solutions (LCS).

• Procedures in creating a content retention policy.

• Support implementations and procedures.

2

A Growing Trend of a LCS

• “The global lecture capture market is poised to grow 24.1 percent in the next five years from revenues of $162.0 million in 2013 to $592.2 million in 2019.”

-Campus Technology Magazine

WKU’s Growing Trend

• WKU offers more than 80 graduate, undergraduate, and certificate programs that are 100% online.

• The use of distance learning courses (web, telecourses, and on demand) has increased by 9% over the last three years from our regional campus.

4

Current Issues with LCS

• Player incompatibility with certain browsers

• Issues uploading recordings

• Transcoding issues

• Poor customer support

• Lack of innovation

5

What WKU Did

• Lecture Capture RFP

• Requirements:

– System that can connect to LMS (Blackboard).

– Improvements with recording, editing and video storage/distribution.

– Ability to record and connect to classroom peripherals.

– The ability to transfer faculty recordings to new system.

6

Lecture Capture RFP – The process

• Started with eight vendors, ended with four potential candidates.

• 30 test group participants.

• Questions to Participants:

– What strategies do you seek in implementing a LC solution on your campus? What necessities do you seek?

7

Procedures in creating a content retention policy

• Current WKU status of recordings:

– 70,431 lecture capture recordings on virtual server.

– Utilizing 4 ½ TB out of 7 TB of storage space.

– Faculty and students typically make asynchronous recordings.

8

Current Issues

• No automation in deleting recordings.

• Issue in establishing a routine notification to faculty concerning course maintenance/deletion.

• Faculty are limited with creating live streaming of recordings within classrooms.

• Questions to Participants:

– How does your university handle deletion procedures? Care to share any polices?

9

Support implementations and procedures

WKU Support Mechanisms for LCS

• Academic Technology

• Distance Learning

• IT Helpdesk

• Communication Technologies

10

Future Support Issues

• More live classroom video streaming

• More campus divisions, departments, and organizations requesting to utilize the technology.

• How will future support be structured?

• How will future recordings be handled?
