TSW identify examples of 1st and 3rd person point of view in the novel Big
Mouth and Ugly Girl in order to analyze the reliability of the narrators.
Focus: Look at the pictures on the next slide: Who is in them? Where
might they have been taken?

How is Matt characterized? Provide one example of direct and one of indirect
characterization? (Use 2 direct quotes)
In the novel Big Mouth and Ugly Girl, Matt Donaghy is
characterized in chapter 1 as intelligent, a joker and observant.
The author directly characterizes him with the first two traits, “Matt
Donaghy had something of a reputation at Rocky River for being
both brainy and a comic character.” (Oates 4) The narrator goes
on to describe his involvement in the drama club and his desire to
maintain good grades. His action when the police come to take
him out of study hall help to characterize him as observant,
“…they approached him, moving not together but along two
separate aisles, as if to block off his route if he tried to escape.”
(Oates 5) Even under such stressful and confusing circumstances
Matt manages to notice how the two men talk and act, and he uses
that information to make a judgment on the situation. His
observant nature allowed his to gather a good understanding of
the situation quickly. The use of the direct and indirect
characterization gives the reader a well-rounded view of Matt.
