Sailing together in the Big Boat
in the government’s Big
Society! So what does that
mean for us?
The world is moving so
fast these days that the
man who says it can’t
be done is usually
overtaken by someone
doing it!
The key to valuing differences is to realise
that all people see the world, not as it is but
as they are.
The Big Society according to the Cabinet Office
“We want to give citizens, communities and local government the power
and information they need to come together, solve the problems they face
and build the Britain they want. We want society – the families, networks,
neighbourhoods and communities that form the fabric of so much of our
everyday lives – to be bigger and stronger than ever before. Only when
people and communities are given more power and take more
responsibility can we achieve fairness and opportunity for all.
Building this Big Society isn’t just the responsibility of just one or two
departments. It is the responsibility of every department of
Government, and the responsibility of every citizen too. Government on
its own cannot fix every problem. We are all in this together. We need to
draw on the skills and expertise of people across the country as we
respond to the social, political and economic challenges Britain faces.”

ETE
ETE does not come in a guise of ‘Aftercare’. It starts at the beginning of a clients
treatment journey and is part of their care plan from the beginning.
Different aspects of ETE can be accessed at different stages of treatment.
ETE is not just for Christmas, it’s for life.

The SUDRG is a service user
group that designed,
implemented and runs a
Tier 2

Although we work in
partnership within K&C we
are totally independent.

We have 85 volunteers.
90% are service users.
They range from 18-60 in
age.
There are 16 different first
languages apart from
English.
We have volunteers who are
abstinent and those who are
scripted and stable.
We do not follow any
specific model of recovery.
We have a simple ethos.
We are service users. We
are family. There are no
outlaws and you are not
alone.
What services do we offer?
Food and Drink: Movies: Internet
Access: Advice and Information on
Local Services: Yoga: Rock and Roll
Collective: Needle Exchange: 1-1
Support: Alternative Therapies: Art
Workshop: Referrals: Photography
Competitions: A safe and Social
Space: Sports Clubs: Support
Groups
We look after our volunteers
and they look after
everyone else.
We give them in-house
training; regular
supervision, their own
support group and a variety
of roles shaped to the
individual.
We also throw great parties!
We are open for 13 hours a
week.
We see a minimum of 120
contacts in that time.
This does not include the
volunteers!
Remember, never be afraid
to try anything new.
Amateurs built the Ark.
Professionals built the
Titanic.
It is a simple motto but it
works.
Group Discussions then feedback
1. Have we got the recovery programme the
wrong way round – should (Aftercare the old
term) aka ‘reintegration’ sit at the beginning
of the treatment pathway and therapeutic at
the end?
2. If you could design a reintegrated recovery
programme what would it look like?
3. If recovering communities are going to be a
big part of the treatment system what do you
think a recovering community looks like?

The unique partnership formed
by ETE and SUDRG
in Kensington and Chelsea via

we are a ……
Recovering Community
We have Big Ideas, Big Ambition
in our Big Society……
This is the time to influence and inform!
Kensington and Chelsea
Summary
Our clients need access to regular, intensive,
encouragement and guidance as part of their treatment journey
with people who have knowledge and experience of working with
addiction.
When they come to us, their journey back into the community has
only just begun.
Many of our clients have no qualifications, some have never worked
and need a high level of support right through into paid
employment. This can be the most tricky time for some.
We try to prepare them, to cope with the pressures and
complexities that volunteering, training / courses and the
workplace can present to them along with developing their social
skills and networks.
Trust is the highest form of
human motivation
It brings out the very best in
people.
ETE, Peer Run services, Mentoring and Volunteering
programmes must be integrated into the current treatment
system.
Therapeutic treatment is not for everyone. One glove does not
fit all.
Let’s give people in treatment more choice of what they can
access at what stage.
In Kensington and Chelsea, we believe that Tier 3 / 4 services
alone are not enough for ‘realistic’ successful outcomes.
Who is measuring these outcomes after they have left these
services?
A complete treatment system encompasses all
of the above.
