Hitler Defies Versailles
• Hitler’s rise to power was based primarily off the
fact that he pledged to undo the Treaty of Versailles
• March 1935-Hitler begins to rebuild Germany’s
military
• Inspired by the “slap on the wrist” from the League
of Nations, Hitler begins to take greater risks
• March 7, 1936-Germany troops enter the Rhineland
(violation of the Treaty)

• Britain and France appease Hitler hoping to maintain
European peace
• By occupying the Rhineland Hitler gains greater
power and prestige inside Germany
• October 1936-Rome-Berlin Axis (Alliance between
Mussolini and Hitler) is formed
• November 1936-Japan joins the alliance. The three
nations officially call themselves the Axis Powers.
Munich Conference
• September 29, 1938-Conference called by Mussolini
• Members included Germany, France, Britain, & Italy
• France & Britain agreed that Hitler could take the
Sudetenland in exchange Hitler agreed to respect
Czechoslovakia’s borders
• Six months later Hitler took Czechoslovakia and Mussolini
took Albania
• Hitler felt confident that France and Britain would not risk
war
• Hitler and Stalin sign a non-aggression pact on August 23,
1939…Stalin hoped to buy time to rebuild his army
