February – 2014 th 7 rd 23 1980 Games – Lake Placid – The USA Ice Hockey Team - Inspiration • 1988 Games – Calgary – The Jamaican Bob Sleigh Team – ‘Cool Runnings’- Equality & Respect • 1996 Games – Lillehammer – Dan Jansen – Courage & Determination • During the Cold War – the USA & USSR were bitter rivals • The team form the USSR were unbeaten & the best in the world – they had won Gold at every Games since 1964 • The US team was made up of mainly college players led by coach Herb Brooks • Critics thought that this team was a ‘joke' and they would be an embarrassment • Brooks pushed them to their limits in training and turned them into an effective team • Miracle The New York Times wrote before the game •‘Unless the ice melts or the US or another team perform a miracle the USSR will easily win gold for the 6th time in the last 7 major tournaments • Speed skater Jansen tried to win medals at 3 previous Games • In 1984 at Sarajevo he fell in the final • In 1988 at Calgary he was told minutes before he went on the ice that his sister had just died as a result of Leukaemia – he fell again • 1992 in Albertville he was again the favourite and fell in both his finals • 1996 in Lillehammer he fell again in the 500m final • Only one more race before retirement – the 1000m, his last chance • Courage, Determination, Inspiration The 1000m was his last race – he won the gold & broke the world record !! He dedicated his medal to his sister.
