Team – ‘Cool Runnings’- Equality & Respect
• 1996 Games – Lillehammer – Dan Jansen – Courage
& Determination
•
During the Cold War – the USA & USSR were
bitter rivals
• The team form the USSR were unbeaten & the
best in the world – they had won Gold at every
Games since 1964
• The US team was made up of mainly college
players led by coach Herb Brooks
• Critics thought that this team was a ‘joke' and
they would be an embarrassment
• Brooks pushed them to their limits in training
and turned them into an effective team
•
Miracle
The New York Times
wrote before the game
•‘Unless the ice melts or
the US or another team
perform a miracle the
USSR will easily win gold
for the 6th time in the last
7 major tournaments
•
Speed skater Jansen tried to win medals at 3
previous Games
• In 1984 at Sarajevo he fell in the final
• In 1988 at Calgary he was told minutes before he
went on the ice that his sister had just died as a
result of Leukaemia – he fell again
• 1992 in Albertville he was again the favourite and
fell in both his finals
• 1996 in Lillehammer he fell again in the 500m final
• Only one more race before retirement – the 1000m,
his last chance
