The “Rats” work in the concession stand at the Rec during the six-week summer program, providing food to the Rec facility’s members. These kids learn how to use a cash register, work with the Health Department, handle the public, pay themselves a small hourly wage, and basically run a small business under the supervision of an adult. A very worthwhile endeavor!! To volunteer or for more information, please call Evelyn Seipp at 845 868-7113. OTHER PROGRAMS Summer & Fall Soccer Both summer and fall soccer is offered to children in grades K through 6 and are held on the athletic fields at Cold Spring School. The summer program is a less formal one with practices on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. for 5 weeks for a fee of $10. It will begin this year on July 12 and end on August 11 with a pizza party. The fall soccer program is run in conjunction with the Town of Washington. The Stanford/Washington Rec Fall Soccer League is a 10-week program for $40 with formal teams, uniforms, up to two practices a week and a game every Saturday. It begins with practices in late August and finishes the first week of November with a tournament for all teams. Any age appropriate child may join either summer or fall soccer or both – no tryouts involved! You must sign up for fall soccer at one of the summer program registration dates. Adult volunteers are greatly needed for this program. Please contact Sue Blouse at (845) 266-5933. Frankenstein’s Fortress This unique program, run by the Town of Stanford Rec Commission, raises funds for capital improvements to the Rec facility and provides much enjoyment to all participants. The Fortress is a grouping of trails and structures, located at the Town’s Highway Department, which takes on different themes each October under the direction of Peter Wing, a local artist and “fright master”. This year is our thirteenth year of adults and children volunteering their time to act, create scenes, assist in applying make-up or handing out costumes, help at the snack table and any other tasks that make this haunted house the success that it is! Frankenstein’s Fortress is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night in October. For more information contact the Rec office at (845) 868-7782. Winter Basketball Starting in January and continuing into March, basketball is held in the Cold Spring School gymnasium. Each age group plays one day a week between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Teams are formed and participants receive team shirts. The fee for this program is as follows: children in grades K – 2, $10; grades 3 – 4, $15; and grades 5 – 6, $20. Youths in grades 7 – 12 have a open gym night on one night during the week from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with no fee charged for these pick-up games. Coaches are needed for the basketball teams and chaperones are needed for all the sessions.
