ELECTROLYSIS
In the electrolysis of molten lead(II) bromide (PbBr₂) using inert electrodes like carbon
(graphite) and platinum, the following products are formed:
Electrode Reactions and Products:
1. The Cathode (Negative Electrode) – Lead Metal (Pb) is Deposited
-Observation: A silvery-grey lead deposit forms at the cathode.
-Process: Lead(II) ions in the molten electrolyte gain electrons (reduction) and solidify as
metallic lead.

2. At the Anode (Positive Electrode) – Bromine Gas (Br₂) is
Released
-Observation: Reddish-brown bromine vapors are seen
bubbling off at the anode.
• Process: Bromide ions lose electrons (oxidation) and form
bromine gas, which escapes into the atmosphere.

ELECTROLYSIS PROCESS SUMMARY:
• Molten lead(II) bromide serves as the electrolyte, providing free-moving lead and bromide
ions.
• Inert electrodes (graphite or platinum) allow electron transfer but do not react themselves.
• Lead metal collects at the cathode, while bromine gas evolves at the anode.
• External power source supplies energy, driving the non-spontaneous redox reactions.
