Chapter 14 - Transport in Plants Monday, July 25, 2022 10:01 AM SECTION B SYLLABUS OBJECTIVE 4.2: IDENTIFY THE MATERIALS WHICH NEED TO BE TRANSPORTED IN PLANTS Plants need a transport system so that cells deep within the plants tissues can receive the nutrients they need for cell processes. • The problem in plants is that roots can obtain water, but not sugar, and leaves can produce sugar, but can’t get water from the air. • The transport system in plants is called vascular tissue. • Xylem tissue transports water and soluble minerals. • Phloem tissue transports sugars and amino acids (transports food substances and some ions). • CO2 and O2 can easily be transported into and out of the plant through diffusion. • However, water and other nutrients need special transport systems to get them into the cells of plants. • Water needed for photosynthesis enters through the root and needs to be supplied to the cells of the shoot (leaves and stem). • Food made from photosynthesis in leaves, must be supplied to various parts of the plant. ITQ 1: Use a table to show the substances that are transported in a plant. Indicate where the substance is transported from and to, and its importance to the plant. Page 1
