Arabic Alphabet
Arabic Alphabet or (Arabic abjad), Arabic language includes 28 letters, and it is written from
right to left in a cursive style. The Arabic script is mainly used in Middle East, North Africa,
Persia, Central Asia and the Northwestern Indian Subcontinent.
There are some main rules for writing Arabic we need to learn before we start:
1. The Arabic alphabet is always cursive and letters vary in shape depending on their
position in the word. Each letter has 3-4 forms each form is used based on the letter
position in the word whether it is at the beginning of the word, middle or end. We will
demonstrate these in examples below.
2. Arabic language has 3 vowels ( Ah : ‫ ا‬Oh : ‫ و‬E : ‫ )ي‬these three letters are
considered vowels because almost all Arabic words have these sounds, however in
some Arabic words where the above mentioned vowels do not exist we use shorter
vowels and they look like symbols :
The first symbol above the line on the right is put on the letter when its sound is Ah.
The symbol in the middle under the line is put when any of the Arabic letters has the
sound Eh.
The third one on the left is put on the letter when it sounds Oh.
3. As we said the Arabic alphabet is connected (cursive) like this word : ‫ تمام‬this word has
4 letters, but there are only 6 letters that don’t connect with any letter that comes on
the left side of them, and we will highlight them in red in the bellow alphabet table.
Here we will demonstrate the Arabic alphabet for you, how to write each letter and
how the form of it changes based on its position in the word:
