Jeremias Peralta Mr. Sabeta EDUC 1300 AH2 September 28, 2016 Carol Dweck Reflection My personal weaknesses in the past consisted of procrastination, being easily distracted, and lacking motivation. With my procrastination, what I do to get over it is being consistent with days I am able to do work and knowing the deadline for assignments. I set alarms and dates to work on certain things each day so I won’t wander off doing something that isn’t going to be beneficial for me. For easily getting distracted, instead of working at home I decide to work at the American Honors lounge since I get work done much faster there than at home. When I’m at home distractions are everywhere and the temptation for doing other stuff is hard to not do. The lounge offers everything a student needs to get things done. Finally, for the lack of motivation, what I tend to do is do stuff right after they are assigned to me. For example, whenever my stats class ends I immediately do my homework right after. Why? Because everything that you learned will soon be gone from your memory and later in the week one will feel lazy to study for it later on. I think Dweck’s talk helped me understand more how an individual can succeed with having a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset. A growth mindset allows you to get better and better rather than thinking you can’t accomplish nothing thinking the same way. I can apply this especially for my schoolwork and for basically anything for life. School is a place to learn and having a growing mindset helps make you better and better and not letting things let you down just because of a system that criticized you. For life, anything you come across you can become better at it. One can always reach for the desire for improvement to progress in skills and knowledge.
