Expressionism: Influences and Characteristics
In part a reaction against Impressionism and academic art,
Expressionism was inspired most heavily by the currents in late 19th
century art. Vincent Van Gogh, Edvard Munch and James Ensor
proved particularly influential to the Expressionists, encouraging the
distortion of form and the deployment of strong colors to convey a
variety of anxieties and yearnings. It has sub-movements, various
styles arose within the expressionist art were: fauvism, dadaism,
surrealism, social realism. The art movement was also influenced in
the reaction to the industrialization and the growth of cities. The
inevitability of world war, power of capitalism, and the rise of the
society instill on the minds of men. Its goal is to strongly impose the
artist’s own sensibility, interpretation, and perception of the world’s
reflection.
Expressionism often employed swirling, swaying, using bold and
vibrant colors, and exaggeratedly executed brushstrokes in the
depiction of their subjects. These techniques were meant to convey
the turgid emotional state of the modern world, on the other hand,
Impressionism emphasizes on the used of short “broken” strokes,
placing unmixed colors, painting 2outdoors to capture light changes,
and capturing everyday subjects and scenes of life, on the other
hand.
