York Castle High School Safety & Security Club Newsletter November, 2023 EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS TIPS WHAT TO DO DURING AN EARTHQUAKE ⮚ If you are indoors: Use the DCH Technique ● Drop to the ground, take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or other piece of furniture & HOLD on till the shaking stops. If there are no sturdy desks or tables near you, COVER your face and head with your arms and CROUCH in an inside corner. Stay away from glass windows, doors or anything that could fall such as lighting fixture. ⮚ If you are outdoors ● MOVE away from buildings, street lights and utility wires. If you are in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. ● If you are in a car, stop & stay inside but move away from bridges as well as buildings, street lights & utility wires. AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE ⮚ When the shaking stops: ● Move briskly to the designated Assembly point in a line. ● Remain in the line ● Ensure that your names are marked in the register ● Move to your classroom in an orderly manner after the all clear signal is given ⮚ If you are trapped under debris ● DO NOT light a match ● DO NOT move around or kick up dust ● COVER your mouth with handkerchief or clothing ● TAP on a pipe or wall so that rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if available. Use shouting as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.
