Yakuts or Sakha (саха, saxa; plural: сахалар, saxalar) are a
Turkic ethnic group who mainly live in the Republic of
Sakha in the Russian Federation, with some extending to
the Amur, Magadan, Sakhalin regions, and the Taymyr and
Evenk Districts of the Krasnoyarsk region.

Yakuts believe that it requires a special talent and one can become a
shaman only through great pain. There are only a few shamans in Yakutia and
they rarely show themselves in public.
The first exact historical data about Yakuts can be found only since the time of
their first relations with Russians, i.e. the 1620s, and their annexation
to Russian Empire.
It is estimated that about 30% of Yakut vocabulary consists of loanwords
from Mongolian, e.g., дьыл from Mongolian жил ‘year’.
