begins to develop and change as they become
an adult.
WALT: Understand changes
during puberty
Dydd Mawrth 5 Mawrth
Dydd Mawrth comes from the latin Dies Martis, the
day of Mars. Mars was the Roman God of War. As
well as this day, the planet Mawrth (Mars) and
Mawrth (the month of March) was named after him.
The NHS (National Health Service) states “The average age for girls to start puberty is 11,
while for boys the average age is 12. But it's perfectly normal for puberty to begin at any point
between the ages of 8 and 13 in girls and 9 and 14 in boys.”
Task – Analyse the data below and determine if you agree or disagree with the NHS
statement above. Follow steps A-D, using the space provided for workings out.
Wordsmith: An
average is a single
‘typical’ value that
is used to
represent a set of
values. The most
commonly used
averages are
mean, median and
mode.
a) The mean is the most commonly used average. It is found by finding the total of the
values and dividing by how many values there are.
b) The median is an average that is found by listing the values in order and finding the
middle value.
c) The mode is the value that occurs most often. This average can be used for nonnumerical values, eg ‘red’.
d) The range is not an average. Instead, it is used to show how varied the data is.
