Stiff neck quora: (left off at joseph doughty)
Parts of the neck and refer pain to the head. The nerves in the top of
the neck (C1-C3) provide sensation to the face and head
● If these nerves are affected by stiff joints they can cause pain in
the head. (known as referred pain)
Physiotherapy: First they try to identify the different potential causes of
your neck pain and headaches.
● Then they feel and assess the structure of the neck to decide if
they may be causing your headache
● If it is the neck structures involved, they’ll find:
○ Tight & painful structures in your neck (joint & muscles)
○ Pressure on specific structures of your neck will reproduce
your head pain
○ Postural changes like a forward head posture and stiff
mid-back
○ Reduced motion in the upper joints of the neck
○ Reduced endurance in the deep muscles of the neck

Deeper dive into Neck Pain
Neck Pain - about 1 in 3 people are affected once a year – women more often than
men. Chronic pain means pain that last for weeks, months and years
Neck pain normally leads to tight muscles around neck and shoulder
trigger points lead to pain and discomfort which often radiates to the nearby areas
such as the head, the neck, the shoulders and the upper back.
Tight shoulders can cause pain or stiffness in your neck, back, and upper body and
limit your daily activities. Your shoulders may feel tight and stiff due to stress, tension,
and overuse. Tight shoulders can also be caused by sitting for extended periods,
incorrect sleeping positions, and injuries.
When there is tension in the trapezius, it can lead to strain and tightness. This strain can
cause discomfort and pain in the neck area
For chronic pain, the longer it persists, the harder it becomes to “turn off” the pain
system
Causes of neck pain
The # 1 cause for neck pain is from poor posture and the muscle strain that comes
from that action. What happens is normally this poor posture causes the muscles in
the neck and upper back to become tense, fatigued and overworked. This tension
and strain leads to neck pain and stiffness. Additionally, maintaining an awkward
position for an extended period can strain the neck's muscles, ligaments, and joints,
contributing to discomfort and pain.
Overuse or excessive tension (aka Muscle strains): poor posture, prolonged
computer use, or carrying heavy bags, can lead to muscle strain and pain. Reading in
bed can strain neck muscles too.
Poor posture: Maintaining improper posture, such as slouching or craning the neck
forward while working at a desk or using electronic devices, can put additional stress
on the neck muscles and spine, leading to pain.
Neck Injuries: Whiplash injuries from collision that cause the head to jerk back and
forward, strain the soft tissues of the neck
Herniated Discs: The intervertebral discs in the neck can herniate or bulge, putting
pressure on nearby nerves and causing neck pain. This condition is often referred to
as cervical disc herniation.
Degenerative Changes: As people age, the cervical spine can undergo degenerative
changes, such as osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease, which
may lead to chronic neck pain.
Osteoarthritis: Also a common cause of neck pain. Like other joints in the
body, neck joints tend to wear with age. This causes the body to form bone spurs
that can affect joint motion and cause pain. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause neck
pain too
Poor Sleeping Position: Sleeping in an awkward position, using an unsupportive
pillow, or having a mattress that does not provide adequate spinal support can
contribute to neck pain.
Stress and Tension: Emotional stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension and
tightness in the neck, resulting in pain and discomfort.
Cervical Spondylosis: a degenerative condition affecting the neck's vertebrae and discs,
can also be responsible for a stiff neck and head pain. As we age, the spinal discs and joints
undergo wear and tear, leading to the development of bone spurs and narrowing of the
spinal canal. These changes can result in nerve compression, causing pain that radiates
from the neck to the head.
Problems associated w/ Neck Problems:
● Cervicogenic Headache (CGH): dull ache in the neck and
radiates upward along the back of the head. Almost always
affecting just one side.
○ Pain may spread to the forehead, temple, and area
around the eyes and/or ears
○ Caused by underlying disc, joint, muscle, or nerve
disorder in the neck
○ This type of headache (secondary headache) is a result
of an underlying condition.
● Occipital Neuralgia: Sharp painful electric-shock-like
sensation on the back of the head, neck, and ears. Pain is
typically one-sided and begins in the upper neck and spreads
to the head
○ Caused by injury or irritation to occipital nerve
○ This headache disorder (primary headache) not from an
underlying condition
■ Rare type of chronic headache disorder
● Tension headache: neck and scalp muscles become tense or
contract
○ Contractions can be caused by stress, depression, head
injury, or anxiety
●
Symptoms of neck pain:
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
Pain thats often worsened by holding head in one place for long periods, like
when driving or working at a computer
○ Pain can range from mild discomfort to severe, sharp or shooting pain
○ The pain may be localized to the neck or radiate to other areas like
shoulders, arms or head
Muscle tightness and spasms
Decreased ability to move the head
Headaches: tension headaches from muscle tension in the neck and upper
back
Soreness or tenderness: feel sore or tender to touch
Muscle spasms: muscle contractions or spasms in the neck, resulting in pain
and limited mobility
Difficulty moving the neck: hard to turn the head when driving or looking over
your shoulder
Stiffness: tightness or reduce range of motion in the neck
○ Stiff neck and accompanying head pain:
○ One of the most common culprits is muscle strain and tension
■ From muscle strain, cervical spondylosis, injuries
○ Poor posture, prolonged sitting, or sleeping in awkward position can
lead to the tightening of the neck muscles, causing stiffness &
discomfort
■ Stress & anxiety can make it worse
Treatment: heat or cold packs. Gently stretching exercises, over the
counter pain relievers. More serious cases PT, chiro, or prescription meds
○ Prevention: maintain good posture, using ergonomic equipment,
practicing regular neck and shoulder exercises.
■ Relaxation works to alleviate muscle tension
Numbness or tingling: sometimes neck pain is accompanied by numbness,
tingling, or weakness in the neck, shoulders, arms or hands
Poor posture: forward head posture
Difficulty sleeping: uncomfortable to find a comfortable sleeping position
○
●
●
●
Prevention:
● Use good posture
● Take frequent breaks if you travel long distances or work long hours at your
computer.
○ Stretch your neck and shoulders
● Adjust your desk, chair and computer so that the monitor is at eye level. Knees
should be slightly lower than hips. Use chair armrests
● When you sleep your head and neck should be aligned with your body. Use a
small pillow under your neck and sleep on your back with your thighs elevated
on pillows to flatten your spinal muscles
● Be more active
Deep dive into the Trapezius
Anatomical Connection: The trapezius is a large, triangular muscle that extends from
the base of the skull, down the neck (cervical spine), and across the shoulders to the
mid-back (thoracic spine). It's divided into three parts: the upper, middle, and lower
trapezius. The upper part, in particular, is directly connected to the neck, attaching to the
occipital bone and cervical vertebrae.
Support and Movement: The trapezius muscle supports the weight of the arm and is
instrumental in moving and stabilizing the shoulder blades (scapulae) and the neck. It
helps in neck extension, rotation, and lateral flexion (side bending). When there's tension
or dysfunction in the trapezius, these movements can be affected, leading to discomfort
or pain in the neck.
Stress and Posture: The trapezius is often subjected to stress from poor postures, such
as forward head posture or hunching over a desk, which strains the neck and shoulder
muscles. This strain can lead to tightness and pain in the upper trapezius, manifesting
as neck pain.
Trigger Points: The trapezius muscle is prone to developing trigger points, especially in
the upper region. These are tender, knotted areas in the muscle that can cause pain
both locally and in referred patterns, often contributing to neck pain and headaches.
Nerve Implications: Tension in the trapezius can sometimes impinge upon or irritate
nearby nerves, such as the spinal accessory nerve, leading to pain that can radiate from
the neck into the shoulder and down the arm.
How Knots are formed
Poor Posture: One of the most common causes of knots and tension in the trapezius
muscle is poor posture. Slouching or spending long periods with the head and neck
jutting forward, as often happens when using computers or smartphones, places extra
strain on the trapezius muscle. This strain can lead to the formation of tight spots or
knots
Overuse and Repetitive Strain: Repetitive motions or prolonged activities that involve
the shoulders and neck, such as lifting, typing, or certain sports, can overwork the
trapezius muscle. Overuse leads to muscle fatigue, tightness, and the development of
knots.
Injury or Trauma: An injury, such as a whiplash or a direct blow to the area, can cause
the trapezius muscle to tighten up as a protective response, which can lead to knots and
ongoing tension.
Poor Ergonomics: Working in an environment with poor ergonomic setup can contribute
to muscle strain. For example, sitting at a desk that is too high or too low, or using a
chair without proper back support, can strain the trapezius muscle.
Sleeping Positions: Awkward sleeping positions or an unsupportive pillow can strain
the neck and shoulder muscles, including the trapezius, leading to knots and stiffness.

You have to “lean into the pain” sometimes- but that’s what trigger point release is all about. I
literally feel the day’s tension start to melt away after about 5-6 minutes of light rocking
It's clear now that all my pain is from having super tight trap muscles
The best investment you can make. I've seen a chiropractor (multiple times) and that didn't
put a dent in my issue. I can't afford the luxury of a massage every week or even every other
week and I was running out of options. Not able to turn my head from side to side, and
overall my range of motion was extremely limited. After 10 minutes and a heck of a lot of "it
hurts so good" moaning, I got up, and sweet Jesus I had range of motion again!

I decided to do PT instead, which indeed helped a lot with the problem but it still wasn't a full
recovery. A deep tissue Thai massage finally got me to the state where I could normally
exercise again without major pain. In the meantime learned about the ischaemic pressure
technique, which was able to help with some of the trigger points, however, there was still
this one trigger point in my levator scapulae that would trigger needle-like pain every now
and then when I tried to touch my chin to my neck. It wasn't easy to reach to apply the
ischaemic pressure there. I decided to get LittleMum massager with very little expectations
that it will get me to some better state but after 3 days of regular use, this little lobster (what I
call it now) really helped to turn off those horrible trigger points. Almost no more morning
pain after a few days.
The massage therapists who are accessible in my area are booked up for a month, and cost
like $180-200 per session. Last night I wiggled for 40 minutes on this thing, and - though, I'm
a bit sore from it -, that freaking knot deep inside my upper back is released. This thing is
worth every penny I paid for it. And it's super sturdy.
I leave it on the couch , so I can lean back on it.... I would say its very useful, when you are
not able to get a normal massage.
When used as intended, it’s beautiful. I could lay on this for a long time and find all the sweet
spots. I have tried various trigger point devices and this is my new go-to. I am a personal
trainer and yoga instructor and I would recommend this to any client.
Amazon sells lots of these massagers and they all look the same... THEY ARE NOT THE
SAME. This SPECIFIC one cost a little more than the imitation but it is made of the
stronger material. I had an imitation before that looked identical to this one but the material
was too soft to give any massage/pain relief value. This one leaves you feeling like you got a
full back massage when you are done. I've had it for a few months now and it's just as sturdy
as when I first purchased.
Customer persona: This product helps me find relief after a long day. My little back story: I
am an athletic female (with over 15 concussions), 5ft 5inches, weighing 160 lbs, lifts
+100 lbs repeatedly everyday at work, and 'carries my stress' on my shoulders. Lifting
as much as I do makes my shoulders and neck tighten tremendously by the end of the day.
When my shoulders + neck tighten to the extent that they do, my post concussion syndrome
symptoms flare horribly. My mind gets fuzzy like I'm concussed again, tension headaches,
extreme light sensitivity, noise sensitivity and irritability, etc. The first time I used this product
made me want to weep in relief, I despise having to use medications like ibuprofen and
muscle relaxers to get me by. I hope this helps others find relief too.
works well especially when you move yours arms in a circular motion
You might think this thing is expensive but it's cheaper than a single massage therapy
session. In fact, it's giving me more relief than the massage therapists and PT trainers, and
chiropractors I've seen for TMJ and neck/shoulder tension. I have to put a folded towel over
the highest neck nubs since my traps are so, so tight that the force I can apply to them with
the "lobster" (it really does look like a lobster, haha) pushes back so strongly on the neck.
Maybe in more time I will have softened up my angry traps (they feel much better already)
that I don't need a towel. This plus another stretcher thing I have for my upper neck (text
neck issues) really make a huge difference
Apparently this was made solely for people with absolutely no body fat. I cannot feel any of
the pressure point domes at all. I wish so very much that Littlemum would make another
version of this same tool but with trigger point nodes replacing all of the worthless flat

domes. A Trigger Point Massager for those with a Padded Trapezius, if you will. Please
make this and fast as I need your help.
I tried physical therapy, muscle relaxers, stretching, etc and the pain always came
back. I bought this item out of sheer desperation and wow! After a week or 2 the pain started
to go away. I can now work a full day without pain and if I start feeling pain coming on I can
lie on it for a few minutes to ward it off. It took some time to figure out where I needed to
place the "nodes" but once I did I was amazed. I now use it in my recliner in the evenings
to hit the tension spots and keep them loose. Great product!
These are so heavy and dense - the reason they are effective. Recommend to not buy them
from a partner seller to ensure you get the real deal because trying to save a few bucks
makes no sense considering the authentic product will last a lifetime
I tried a cheaper version and sent that one back as it didn't come close to the quality of this
one.Like the LittleMum back massager, it can be used for other muscles as well. I have
found that it is excellent for releasing the adductors on the inner thighs if you lie prone on the
floor with the leg you want to treat flexed at the hip about 90 degrees, and the massager
placed with the higher end near the groin and the lower end toward the knee. The slope of
the tool adds a whole new dimension to its versatility. Definitely worth the price!
Persona: Since nicer weather, been overworking my back muscles outside gardening and
landscaping. Need to use this faithfully..daily. Because when I do, I’m much better off. My
range of motion is better, and I’m more relaxed after just a few minutes. I’m in my 60s and
have issues w muscle pain. It’s a little pricey, but I would definitely buy again. For my
needs it’s worth it.
I use it on my incline bench press to maximize my workout
I would pay extra for a large one with a dedicated cradle so I can lay my head into it and fall
into place
I use this little “lobster” daily by placing it on my yoga mat and then gently lying on it
(take it slow). Great pre-stretch pressure point neck and upper back massage.
I’ve noticed a difference after using it daily. Less pain and more mobility.
Persona: I’m a truck driver, so my shoulder muscles are super tense. I even bought a
teragun massager , however, this is the only thing that releases the tension.

Differentiator
A Good way to differentiate from other competitors is to market ours as more high quality and sturdy
to actually target the pain points
How is this product a solution to the problem?
Breaks up deeper muscle tension, adhesion, and scar tissue may be painful but is an
effective way to aid in the recovery from chronic pain. The pain naturally fades away
in a short time after you finish your 5-10 minute session
This is a neck and shoulder massager. It helps relieve neck pain by using massage
techniques to relax and soothe the muscles in your neck and shoulders. The
massager's design allows it to target specific areas, like the trapezius muscle, where
tension often builds up. When you use this product, it can improve blood circulation,
reduce muscle tightness, and ease discomfort, which can ultimately alleviate neck
pain and stiffness.
Stages of market awareness
Target Neck pain but just introduce this as a unique mechanism and how this
product actually helps for neck pain because it’s new mechanism helps with
surrounding muscles responsible for neck pain
Myofascial release is a type of physical therapy often used to treat chronic pain
conditions, including neck pain. It focuses on reducing pain and increasing range of
motion by easing tension and tightness in the myofascial tissues.
Doesn’t necessarily treat neck, should and back pain but rather by targeting the
trigger points, it relieves the pain associated from those trigger points.
How does the trapezius massager solve neck, shoulder and back pain?
Poor posture causes knots/tension/trigger points to form specifically around the neck, upper
back, and shoulder area (aka the whole trapezius area). The trapezius massager provides relief
for neck, shoulder, and back pain by targeting the trigger points specifically in the trapezius
muscles. It does this through myofascial release. But it also helps through suboccipital release
and posture correction by stretching and lengthening tight pectoral muscles due to poor posture,
contributing to neck and shoulder pain.
