The political cartoons provided often depicted racism towards African Americans to have white North Carolinians give control back to Democrats. In the first political cartoon, there is an image of lady liberty with chains and a shackle with the text “Negro Rule.” This cartoon wanted to use the fear that white North Carolinians were currently being held back by African Americans. This fear that they felt from the image would make white North Carolinians want to give power to the democrats to free themselves. In the next image, there is a devil that is influencing a citizen to vote for African American rule. This image would scare white North Carolinians because most of them were Christian and would associate the devil and evil with voting for African Americans. This would cause very religious people to steer clear and vote for democrats as said by the poster and “Don’t be tempted by the devil.” In the last image, there is a scary-looking vampire that is terrorizing citizens with the text “Negro Rule” on the wings of the vampire. This image would scare the white North Carolinians to vote for the democrats by making it seem that the problems that terrorize North Carolinians are African Americans' fault and voting for the democrats would solve that problem. A common theme among all the images was its negative depiction of African Americans and making it seem like not having them would solve many problems in North Carolina. This would influence the people to vote for the Democrats, who were heavily against African Americans, allowing them to have more power.
