In this fast-changing world where there is a continuous increase in population, thus also increase in the number of infrastructure and buildings, the need to prioritize energy efficiency is vital. In addition, reducing heat transfer through the building materials will conserve energy. That is why in this article, the researchers particularly determine the effects of having phase changing materials (PCM) on building materials on the rate of heat transfer. PCM are widely known as latent heat storage. Meaning, they can absorb latent heat to make thermal comfort because PCMs has the ability to store and release large amounts of latent heat and this characteristic is ideal for the constructions of modern buildings. They used paraffin as the PCM and tested it alongside with different conventional building materials to investigate the rate of heat transfer. And they have found out that there is a significant difference or advantage on achieving steady state conditions using the PCM alongside with the different conventional building materials. Which means that PCMs such as paraffin is effective to be used in construction to reduce heat transfer thus promotes energy efficiency. Reaction/Impact: I have learned in our thermodynamic lesson about the phase change as well as the latent heat and how does this work or all about this concept. However, I didn’t know at first that there is an actual phase change materials that is significantly used in our industrial buildings meaning, they are everywhere around us and we are benefiting from them. That is why upon searching about the journal articles regarding this topic, this research article really caught my interest. Because prior from reading this I just only know about insulators that are used between walls to reduce heat, but I didn’t realize that those some videos I am watching in youtube or facebook something similar about this, are actually PCMs. And is significantly used on today’s world. This research and my realization are the real life example of this concept, and I will remember this not only from the examples given and because of the formulas. But because of its significance and the fact that it is already around me.
