What Happens to Water After Heavy Rainfalls

"What Happens to Water After Heavy Rainfalls?"
After heavy rainfalls, several substances in the water can increase. One of
the most important things that goes up is called "runoff." When it rains a lot, the
water from the rain can't soak into the ground fast enough, so it flows over the land
and picks up things like dirt, leaves, and even pollution from streets. This dirty water
then ends up in rivers, lakes, and oceans, making the water less clean.
Another thing that increases in the water after heavy rainfalls is the amount
of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. These nutrients come from fertilizers
people use on their lawns and farms. When it rains heavily, these nutrients can wash
into the water, causing something called "nutrient pollution." It can make the water
not safe for fish and other aquatic animals.
Also, heavy rain can stir up the sediment at the bottom of rivers and lakes,
making the water cloudy and murky. This can affect the plants and animals that live
there. So, after heavy rain, we need to be extra careful to keep our water clean by
not littering and being mindful of the environment. It's important to protect our
water so that it stays safe for all living creatures.
