1. The Renaissance, which took place in Europe from 1350 to 1550, received its name because it
observed a "rebirth" of interest in the literature, philosophy, and other intellectual pursuits of
Greece and Rome. A return to classical ideals and a turn toward humanism, innovation, and
creativity had been its key features.
2. There were many reasons why the Renaissance started in Italy. Rome's capital was in Italy, and
the cities there have preserved a wealth of classical literature and artifacts. The wealthy merchant
class in the Italian city-states also supported artists and academics.
3. Details about the characteristics of the Italian Renaissance
 -Humanism: A focus on human potential, individualism, and the study of classical texts.
 Artistic Innovation: The creation of masterpieces by artists like Leonardo da Vinci and
Michelangelo.
 Scientific Advancements: Pioneering work in fields like astronomy and anatomy.
 Patronage: Wealthy individuals and families, such as the Medici, sponsored artists and
intellectuals.
 Secularism: A shift towards secular (non-religious) themes in art and scholarship.
4. Trade, banking, and industry were a few of the ways Renaissance cities made their money.
Examples include Venice, a significant trading center well-known for dominating Mediterranean
trade. Florence is well-known for its banking sector and the power of the Medici family's wealth.
Milan is prosperous because of its metalworking and textile industries.
5. The governments of Italian city-states during the Renaissance varied greatly. Others were ruled
by elites or wealthy families, like the Medici in Florence and the Sforza in Milan, while some, like
Florence and Venice, were republics with elected officials. The Catholic Church had control over
papal states.
6. A significant Italian family in Florence during the Renaissance was the Medicis. They were
important because they supported numerous artists, including Michelangelo and Botticelli. They
also had a big political influence because several family members were kings or popes. Their
support helped Florence's cultural renaissance during this time.
