SUCCESS OF ONLINE

ONLINE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
SUCCESS OF ONLINE LEARNERS STARTS WITH
ONLINE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
SELF MOTIVATION
ENGAGEMENT
• Interest
• Energy – Get your sleep
• Focused
• Attentive
• Understanding
• Teamwork
• Goals
• Know yourself/ know your weaknesses
• Competitive
• Time management
WHY AM I TAKING THIS CLASS?
• Self Motivation – Disney Movie SOUL 2020 – captures the theme of a person being defined by their
character, and not necessarily by there career, and/ or in comparison to a student at this point would be
their major SOUL ‘Joe & Cat’ Official TV Spots Promo Clips (2020) Disney Pixar, Jamie Foxx

• How to tap into personality traits of the student and tie in their direction to what they enjoy doing
rather that what society expects
• In other words, do we work to live or live to work? Why are we doing what we are doing, why are we
doing math or English or economics and how do they tie to construction or engineering or customer
service or marketing or medical?
• How to create a positive journey during our educational career – how to enhance along the way?
DEFINE AND MOTIVATE WHAT EACH AND EVERY
CLASS MEANS OR DOES
• Any major class focuses on the career path and or profession and vocational training
• General education or liberal studies focuses on critical thinking, analysis and problem
solving – “It’s these types of skills that employers want to see in college grads.”

EDUCATION IS A JOURNEY
• College may be a process in order to graduate, could be 4 years or could be 10; could be one
to two classes at a time or could be getting approval to take 20 units – we need to learn ways
to enjoy the journey
• For my college career in which started in high school and my part time job during my senior
year, I had a really high GPA for elementary school, junior high and all of high school, until my
senior year in which in correlation with a part time job and lack of sleep caused my GPA to
suffer
• Get your sleep – the following link describes sleep deprivation

SUCCESS OF ONLINE LEARNERS
• Bakersfield College
• California State University Bakersfield
• Private vs Public Colleges
• Should online be more expensive or more affordable?
• Credited Local Colleges like Bakersfield College and California State University Bakersfield
providing both online and classroom settings – as a result students do not have to enroll into
private online universities that may result in high
• Some students may excel in the online environment while some may require the classroom
setting
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM SETTING OR HYBRID
• What dictates online vs classroom or hybrid?
• Does the teacher have any influence or department chair?
• For example (math class), is math acceptable for online, what is different between online
vs classroom?
• As for my project mgmt. class, part of the construction mgmt. program, online is
completely acceptable, however for my estimating class the online approach is a
challenge, but yet is doable
SELF MOTIVATION
• Finding an interest and or goal and succeeding
• The goal is to enjoy the road to get there – have Soul along the way, from the Disney movie
• Enthusiasm – enjoy what you are doing, be thankful and be positive
• I will finish in 4 years, and so what if you do not finish in 4 – maybe it takes you 6 years but
you finish – maybe there are other small goals you completed along the way or obstacles you
conquered
• College for me took 10 years, but along the way I gained 10 years work experience, bought a
house and then paid off my school debt 3 mos after graduation
ONLINE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
• Teamwork – group projects and discussions
• How to tie general education into major (construction, engineering, business, medical,
education, arts)
• In each class, why are you doing what you are doing,? If students understand why they are
doing what they are doing, sometimes more things will click. In math, why are we doing
algebra or statistics? Or calculator vs no calculator?
• Examples – links, videos, settings, models, etc
