April 6, 2011 Dear Community Member: My name is Charity Preston and I am a gifted teacher at Hamburger School here in Yahoo, Ohio. I teach gifted math students in grades 3-6. We cover many math topics in class, and will just be finishing off a unit in Data Analysis and Probability. Such things might include using data to choose marketing plans or knowing probability statistics to decide on new products to create at certain times of the year. I am hoping you use some of these topics in your career as well and would like to invite you in to discuss it with my students! Many of Hamburger Elementary’s students come from a low-economic status and would benefit greatly from seeing new careers that are based right here in Yahoo! They may stumble upon a new direction they previously never new existed from you coming to visit our classroom. Yahoo has many professionals and I know my class would benefit greatly from seeing people, such as yourself, in person to interact with them directly. I am only asking for 10 minutes for you to present a little something about who you are, what you do, and how you utilize math at your job. I am also inviting several other community members, so you will sit in with this panel of experts. We will be conducting the guest speaker session from 1:30-2:00 pm on Friday, May 4th, with snacks to follow. If this sounds like something you are available for and interested in attending, please contact me via phone or email at the contact information below. I am very excited to have you come into my classroom and explain to students the meaning of math in a real-world context! Sincerely, Charity Preston Gifted teacher – Hamburger Elementary 239-761-7645 cpreston@hamburgerelementary.net
