STSE Reproductive Technologies Jigsaw Activity
Group Members:
*For the Demo Activity please only focus on Parts two - four
Sterilization (Group 1)
What is Sterilization?
Sterilization is a type of surgery that both males and females are able to undergo to become infertile or sterile.
Tubal ligation surgery in females involves the cutting of the oviducts to ensure that sperm never reaches the
uterus, thus preventing pregnancy. In males the surgical process is called a vasectomy, the ductus deferens is cut
and tied removing sperm from the seman when ejaculation occurs.
Part One: Answer the following questions using this link
a.) What are some risks associated with sterilization in both males and females?
b.) Why are the risks associated with the female sterilization process greater?
c.) How effective is sterilization in both males and females?
sePart Two: Choose 3 out of the following 5 perspectives to discuss with your group about sterilization. Write
at least one positive and one negative argument for each perspective.
Social Perspective
Cultural Perspective
Environmental Perspective Ethical Perspective
Economic Perspective
Part Three: Read the following news article about lawsuits regarding sterilization and answer the following
questions.
1. This article features Indigenous women speaking up about non consensual sterilization as recently as 2018 in
Canada. Is sterilization in these situations ethical? Why or why not?
2. Can sterilization ever be ethical? What makes sterilization ethical or unethical (what criteria must be met for it
to be ethical)?
Part Four: Choose one of the following questions and discuss with your group. Use specific examples and
evidence to support your arguments (from the source above or other sources). Choose a writer to jot down the
main points from your debate, and choose a spokesperson for the class discussion.
1. Should everyone have the same access to reproductive contraception technology? Should the
government be providing access to consensual sterilization to all citizens of Canada as part of our
healthcare system, or should it only be available to those who want to pay privately for it?
2. Some people think that it might be unethical to allow very young men and women to undergo
sterilization surgeries because they might regret it later in life. Others believe that everyone should be
entitled to this choice. What do you think? Use specific evidence and examples to defend your
position.
3. Should there be certain criteria for being able to undergo sterilization (such as a certain age) or should it
be available to anyone? Explain.
Part Five: You will need to represent your group by teaching other peers in your class what you have learned.
