Theme: Literacy
“In South Africa, fifty percent of learners who start school, are still unable to read with
comprehension by the time they reach grade 5.” This constitutes a national crisis since by the
time they reach grade 8 half of those learners have dropped out of school.
In a piece of about 400 words, suggest what you think are useful methods for teaching reading
and how these can contribute to the reading development of learners in the Intermediate
Phase. Draw particularly from the approaches covered in class. Use at least 2 sources and
reference these.

Lesson Plans:
This assessment focuses on lesson planning. You should select three of the reading approaches
covered in the module (modelled reading, guided, shared reading etc). Design a grade
appropriate lesson for each strategy and show integration of the four language skills and
grammar. The lessons should be reading lessons, but should provide opportunities to practice
the other skills as discussed in class.
