Milla 1 Nicole Milla Dr. Winter English 1123 April 9, 2023 Minnie Foster Wright is Guilty in the play, Trifles Trifles is a play written by Susan Glaspell. It was published in 1916. It can be found in Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama and Writing by Kennedy and Gioia on pages 1153-1163. This play is about some officers investigating the case of Mr. Wright, a man who died in his sleep. While the differences between the male and female officers are quite the opposites, Minnie Foster is undoubtedly in the radar of being the culprit. After a turn of events, a bird gives the biggest clue that she committed the murder. “Well, women are used to worrying over trifles.” Minnie Foster is guilty of hanging John Wright because she was abused, isolated, and unhappy in that marriage. Minnie Foster was inferred to be abused by her husband John Wright. There were multiple clues to say so but a critical one is the bird. The bird was found with its neck snapped before the murder of her husband, and throughout the play, the bird was portrayed as Minnie, a bird who sang and was cheerful, but Mr Wright, in his madness, killed the innocent bird, meaning that he did the same to her wife. Furthermore “But he was a hard man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with him—[Shivers] Like a raw wind that gets to the bone.” The setting took place in an isolated farmhouse, so while that says a lot about her life, Minnie wasnt visited by any one during her wedding days, even the officials stated that she was always seen alone but that no one had the courage to go and visit her. “Oh, I wish I’d Milla 2 come over here once in a while! That was a crime! That was a crime! Who’s going to punish that?” This sentence was said when the women found out about her isolation. Winnie Foster was said to be a cheerful lady when she was single, she used to sing in the choir and wear dresses all the time, but when she married Mr Wright, she changed her whole persona into a shabby and unhappy person. She wasn't seen outside and she did not sing anymore, this gives plenty of reason on why she did what she did. “Mr. Henderson said coming out that what was needed for the case was a motive; something to show anger, or— sudden feeling.”Her name Minnie gives away that besides being a lively person, she was short, so one of the reasons that she is guilty of the murder was that her height would make it impossible for her to lift Mr Wright's body, so that's why she hanged him in his own bed. “When I was a girl—my kitten—there was a boy took a hatchet, and before my eyes—and before I could get there—[Covers her face an instant] If they hadn’t held me back I would have—[Catches herself, looks upstairs where steps are heard, falters weakly]—hurt him.” Ms Peters gave away how Minnie Foster was the clear suspect of the murder of her husband, because she was abused, isolated and unhappy. This play shows how women were treated around that time, and is very important to clarify how unethical the decision of Mrs Peters and Ms hales was, but they weren't in a good situation either, so it's important to know how privileged women are right now.
