Trythall 1 Natasha Trythall Professor Cheryl Deeter Cosmetology IV 07 April 2023 Bailey Sarian: The YouTuber Who Made it Big As I was scrolling through Facebook one day I came across this video from a series called Makeup and Murder Mystery. This immediately caught my attention as I had never heard of something like this before. I was so intrigued by the video that I went down a rabbit hole and watched probably five of these types of videos in a row. They were all longer than ten minutes. There was something about the way this person talked about these stories in history, all while applying these cool, artistic and edgy looks to her face. Once I was able to remove myself from the binge watching mood, I decided to look a little deeper. Upon further investigation, I found that this individual’s name was Bailey Sarian. Bailey is a Los Angeles native and still resides there today. Her interest in murder mysteries was sparked by time at work with her mother who was a 911 dispatcher (National Today 7). Bailey began in the makeup industry at Sephora in 2009 as a beauty studio artist and then started working for Urban Decay as a product specialist in 2014. She worked for IPSY as well. Bailey started doing makeup tutorials on YouTube in 2013 but didn’t start her murder mystery series until 2019. In 2020 she posted a video that became so popular that it currently has twenty five million views. It’s a video talking about Jeffrey Dahmer. With the popularity of her videos she was also able to release a podcast called Dark History in 2021. It is estimated that she currently makes about three million dollars a year (National Today 3). She makes money by being sponsored by different companies. She advertises Trythall 2 the brands of makeup that she uses and other sponsors (for example, Casetify) will be featured in the beginning of her videos. What I find great about her is that she was able to bring something completely different to the world. She was able to combine two things she has passion and interest in, and create a career out of it. She can do this job from anywhere in the world and isn’t physically tied to one location. Her popularity has allowed for her to collaborate with others in the podcast type industry. Her makeup tends to be more on the bold and edgy side, which I appreciate and enjoy. Sometimes it is mostly dark colors and other times there are bright, neon colors incorporated. There is almost always some type of shimmer in the eyeshadow and if they eyes are bold, the lip tends to have a more muted and natural color. She tends to lighten the face towards the middle and add contrast with blush underneath the cheekbones. Lately an article was released speaking about how talking about and researching murders and unsolved mysteries would affect Bailey’s wellbeing. She does mention that sometimes it does make her feel like the world isn’t safe after reading about these horrible things. She says that she has started to unplug and try to find balance in her life by taking walks and hanging out with friends (Morin 4). I admire that she is trying to find balance in her life. It can be hard when someone is in the grind and working hard to be able to physically stop and get in that self care. She shares my feelings of wanting people to feel good about themselves (Morin 8). I will continue to enjoy watching her videos to learn more about makeup application and hear about some very interesting horror stories.
