Lord of the Flies Free Write Journals
◼
Journal 1: In your groups you imagined you were in a plane crash (think the pilot episode of
LOST). How did your group work out the following questions: What would you do if you were
stranded on an island? Who would be leader? Rescue or survival as priority? Food? Shelter?
Fresh water? Rescue strategy? In reflecting about that experience, How did you feel? Were
you frustrated? Did you feel you had a voice? How did your group organize to complete the
tasks—did you form a democracy or did someone take on the role of totalitarian
dictator? Were you a leader or one of the followers that sat back and let other people take
over? What did you learn about yourself from this experiment? What did you learn about
human nature from this experimen ?
◼
Journal 2: For most of us when we were little, our biggest fears in life were the boogieman,
monsters, and beasts. When you were younger, were you afraid of any beasts or monsters?
Describe them. Why did you believe in these imaginary creatures? Now that you are a young
adult, what are your biggest fears in life? Who or what are your monsters today? What might
the beastie on the island represent? (Optional: You may draw a picture of your “monster” on
the next page for fun.)
◼
Journal 3: Select any TWO symbols in the novel so far. Illustrate a picture in your journal of
each symbol (literal) and then draw pictures of what each symbol represents. Explain the
meaning of the symbols, and also describe ways in which the symbols change/ develop in the
novel.
◼
SYMBOLS: the conch shell, Piggy’s glasses; the signal fire; the Beastie; island; darkness;
mountain; beach
◼
Journal 4 (after chapter 5): Jack called some of the boys names like “fatty”, “sissy”, and
“crybaby”. Why does Jack do this? Why does it seem that the boys are mean to each other?
What purpose does it serve? Also, some might describe Jack as a bully. Describe an instance
of bullying you have encountered and explain why some people allow themselves to be
bullied or ignore others being bullied rather than speaking to a helpful adult.
◼
Journal 5 (after chapter 6): Select any THEME from the novel so far and select THREE quotes
(CDs) that support that theme. You may select a quote from any of the chapters we have
read so far. Write down the theme and the quotes (MLA format with page numbers) and then
fully explain how each quote supports the theme (the CMs). Also explain how the theme has
developed or changed so far in the novel.
◼
◼
THEMES: civilization vs. savagery; loss of innocence; problem of evil; violence in society;
effect of fear; individualism vs. community; man vs. nature
Journal 6 (after reading chapter 8): Piggy is a clever boy, but he is a victim, too. How is he
important in the novel? Consider what sort of boy Piggy is, what is his character, what does he
symbolize, and how Piggy is treated by the other boys show about them? How has Piggy
changed from the beginning of the novel?
◼
◼
*You should refer to your character chart for this entry.
Journal 7: Imagine that you are Piggy. Compose a letter he might write to his Auntie. Tell her
about what has been happening on the island, as well as how you feel about it. Refer to
specific events and characters in your letter.
◼
Consider: the parachutist; pig roast; any deaths that have occurred; how you feel
about Ralph’s leadership style vs. Jack’s leadership style; the fire; the attack; The Lord of
the Flies…
◼
Journal 8 (after reading ch. 10): Piggy, Simon, and now Ralph are outsiders. In our society, who
are the “outsiders” ? What are the consequences of being an outsider in our society? Should
all people be valued the same if they are not the same? Using the character chart, analyze
the characters Piggy, Simon, and Ralph. What is it about them that sets them apart now?
Consider: motivation, emotions, attributes, allegory (moral, social, religious)
◼
Journal 9 (after reading ch. 11): What is evil? List as many evils in the world you can think of.
Does evil exist only inside of humans, or are there other sources of evil in the world? Golding’s
theory suggests that the defects of a society result from the inherent defects of human nature.
Explain the reasons that his theory may or may not be correct. Provide examples from real
world events (current and/or historical) that support your point of view.
◼
Journal 10 (after finishing the book): The officer on the beach says, “I should have thought that
a pack of British boys- you’re all British, aren’t you?- would have been able to put up a better
show than that- I mean-“ This speech implies that the officer is disappointed in the behavior of
the boys on this island. Yet, ironically, he is an officer on a ship fighting in a terrible adult war.
Discuss the parallels between adults during war and the children on the island.
