Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Social media is well-known throughout the world as a haven and a place where many people can escape their daily realities. Users of social media have the choice to post information in a variety of formats, including text, video, audio, and photography. This technology's use is a widespread phenomena that is becoming increasingly prevalent among young people, particularly students. Through this, students are able to find an alternative method of managing the stress brought on by academics. Social media had surely taken over a student's life and had already taken up a significant portion of it. Yet, as stated by Talaue et al. (2018), the respondents' time spent on social media emphasized that it had a negative impact on their learning progress. In this study, we anticipate providing suggestions and answers for how to assist the students in learning more about social media, which they are now quite interested in. To offer them the relevant knowledge and data regarding how it relates to and affects their learning process. Give them facts on social media overuse and help them understand that, despite the fun they have using it, social media overuse affects their ability to learn. Background of the Study The most recent report this 2022 indicates that adolescents’ social media use grew and climbed by 7 percentage points between 2019 and 2021, from 31 to 38 percent. 76% of teenagers globally were afflicted by this excessive usage of social media, and in the Philippines, 294 out of 513 senior high school students have a social media addiction (Mindajao 2021). It is clear that students’ extreme usage of social media has a negative effect on a variety of aspects in their lives. One of these is their learning process, the outcomes of which are readily apparent. This specifically affects their capacity for learning and academic achievement at school. Additionally, students emphasize their social media lives over their studies. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Statement of the Problem This study will address the problem of what is the impact of excessive use of social media in the learning process of Grade 11 HUMSS students at Tanauan City Integrated High School in School Year 2022-2023. Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions: 1. How can students use social media in their studies and daily lives? 2. How are students’ learning process affected by their excessive use of social media? 3. What are the implications of social media to the learning process of students? Conceptual Framework The framework of this study aims to determine The Impact of Excessive Use of Social Media to the Learning Process of Grade 11 HUMSS Students. The researchers' recommendations for how to lessen the negative effects of excessive social media use and improve its positive effects are included in the output. Significance of the Study The aforementioned will benefit tremendously from the study’s results: Teacher. They will gain valuable information and concepts from this study about how social media overuse affects students’ learning processes. By establishing guidelines or learning methods that can let students enjoy learning while eventually limiting in their usage of social media, they can also guarantee the students’ engagement in their studies. Additionally, this study can help them become better teachers by influencing students to set limits and exercise control over their social media usage. Student. The students will be the study’s main beneficiaries. The results of this study can enable the students become more informed and concerned of how social media impacts their learning. Students will have a deeper understanding of why it is necessary to understand this impact and the insight they need to address related issues. Parent. The study’s outcomes will assist parents in persuading their adolescents to accept and positively respond to the findings and suggestions on excessive social media use that has an impact on their ability to learn. Parents can encourage their children to be Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School aware of how their learning process is impacted by social media use by setting distinct rules for how they can limit themselves when using it. They can act as a role model for their children, urging them to utilize social media in balance. School Administrator. The results of this study could be utilized to enlighten school administrators about the impacts social media has on students’ learning process. This can be a way for the administration of the school to make sure that the students are adequately informed about the impacts of social media. Administrators will receive more specific info from the study regarding the kinds of programs they should employ. Scope and Delimitation of the Study This study seeks to investigate how Tanauan City Integrated High School students’ excessive usage of social media impacts their ability to learn. The researchers want to know how a student’s learning process is impacted by their excessive use of social media. The focus of this study is mostly on social media platforms, as opposed to other kinds of media. Only students enrolled in the 2022–2023 academic year at Tanauan City Integrated High School can participate in this study. There are ten (10) students from Grade 11 HUMSS who can respond. The respondents will be given a questionnaire to complete as both a survey and a reference tool for this study. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Definition of Terms This section defines key terms utilized and related in the study. Conceptual and operational definitions are presented. Learning Process. igi-global.com defined this is a process that individuals go through in order to learn new information and abilities, which ultimately has an impact on their attitudes, choices, and behaviours. This study claims that this is how a person processes all of the information they have learned. Social Media. People can express their thoughts and debate their issues on social media. Through a specific network, social media are digital technologies that enable individuals to publish or discuss things, ideas, photographs, videos, and many other things (Siddiqui & Singh, 2016). According to this research, it serves as a person's getaway from stress and the pressures of daily life. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Chapter 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE The researcher's reviews of literature that are relevant to the current study are presented in this chapter. This section will establish the basis for an in-depth comprehension of the reasons behind why this study is address. Related Literature and Studies One of the top aims of this study is to examine the relationships between social media usage factors and undergraduate students' educational outcomes as well as the interactions between using social media for academic communication activities and educational achievement. According to research, social media, which provides a space outside of the classroom for discussing academic matters, can help students be more engaged in class and spend more time preparing for lessons before class, both of which are associated with better academic success. Conclusions once again show that undergraduate students use social media extensively for a variety of daily tasks, Arslan (2018). Chukwuere (2021) Can social media sites help learners advance their academic learning? This study intends to answer this topic as well as numerous others that Practical Research 1 concern students and academics in developing nations. Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Unfortunately, because social media platforms are distracting to students, the effects of these platforms on academic learning progress are sometimes misunderstood. Social media sites, in the opinion of many academics, have no beneficial effects on students' intellectual development. The purpose of this study is to look into how social media sites affect students' academic development. According to his research, social media platforms enhance students' academic learning performance as well as their ability to communicate, connect, and engage in self-directed learning (SDL). These results show that social media platforms have a positive influence on learners' learning development. In summary, this study helped us understand how social media platforms affect first-year students' educational learning development. This benefits academic learning and increases student's ongoing involvement in the learning process. Whether used for academic or non-academic reasons, social media platforms are accepted and used more frequently as a result of this study's findings. This study discusses the importance of social media in the educational field and discusses how social networks affect learning, students, and adolescent life. Additionally, it tackles the risks and dangers social networking sites provide to children and teenagers. Although the effects of social media may be positive for students, a closer examination of these effects reveals that they can also be harmful. It was discovered that social media, as mentioned above, can have a highly harmful impact on education and threaten the futures of children and adolescents. In conclusion, Desai (2022) says that this is damaging students' careers and future today. It may be inferred from the findings of the present study that the involved students are mindful of the negative outcomes that social media use has on their social lives, educational attainment, and health. Nevertheless, despite these drawbacks, many find it challenging to avoid using social media. The participating students claim that social media is an ineffective communication tool that makes it simple to obtain news and information, is amusing, addictive, and unsuitable for young children. Gedik & Cosar (2020) seeks to identify the social media accounts that middle school adolescents use and their motivations for using those accounts. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Thus, using social media can become addictive, which can seriously harm a person's life in a number of different ways. As a result, females in both age categories made up the majority of the study's participants. More time spent on social media in a day has a deleterious effect on study timings, which in turn has a poor impact on study outcomes and academic performance, according to Jamil et al. (2020). The purpose of this study is to ascertain how social networking sites affect students' academic performance in Islamabad and Rawalpindi (Pakistan). To examine the uses of social networking sites and how these use habits affect learning, human engagement, and sleep quality, is the aim of Kolhar et al. (2021). Studies have revealed a high positive correlation between social media use and academic achievement, and it was discovered that using social media had a negative impact on academic advancement. The majority of individuals chatted on social media sites rather than for academic purposes. Hence, it's crucial to establish how much time students spend on social media sites and how much of that time is spent utilizing them for academic objectives. Social media addiction was reported by 57% and 52% of the students, and it significantly impaired their learning activities (p = 0.035). In addition, 66% of them said they were more drawn to social media than to their studies. Researchers and practitioners have been attempting to investigate the effects of social media on student learning and participation in higher education settings for the past twenty years is found in the study of Mahdiuon et al. (2019). The findings demonstrated that student acceptance of Telegram is a favourable and significant predictor of its use within education. Student involvement and the academic usage of Telegram were positively and significantly correlated. Telegram's educational use had an impact on academic performance via modulating student engagement. Academic achievement has a strong correlation with student participation in the educational and learning process. In line with the study of Rahman & Mithun (2021), students are participating in these sites for a variety of reasons. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend how social media affects college students. Researchers from all over the world have become quite interested in this subject in latest years. The Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School current study was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Bangladesh, taking into account the social implications of this problem. The findings of the current study make it clear that Bangladeshi university students' use of social media has a big impact on them. According to survey results, Facebook is the most popular social media platform among respondents, followed by YouTube, and communication was noted as the primary motivation behind utilizing various social media platforms. Their research reveals that students' use of social media has a negative impact on their academic achievement. In conclusion, the research shows that while social media consumption benefits students, it also steals their study time, lowers their cognitive progress, and negatively affects their relationships and emotions. As stated by, Saha & Guha (2019) to comprehend the impact on their other daily varied activities, the title survey was conducted on the type of social media usage by students at two reputable colleges in Bangladesh. Most students do not perceive any negative effects from social media in their lives. The utilization of social media for news updates and various forms of communication with others has a beneficial effect on some of the respondents. Regardless of the situation, social life has a detrimental impact on students that it significantly hinders their academic performance and wastes a lot of their time. The study came to the conclusion that social media had no noticeably negative impacts on a student's life. If the students' lives haven't been negatively impacted, this will result in a healthy existence, which could then improve and shape the learning process and the creation of meaning. To investigate how social media, a medium for educating the youth of today, affects students' cognitive progress, particularly in mathematics, is the focused of Yussuf & Olaoye (2021). The good impacts are considerable, but there are also negative effects. If social media use by youth is not adequately supervised by a grownup or the parents, it can seriously harm their physical and mental health and keep them from engaging in serious and relevant learning. Additionally, it is obsessive and as a result poses major health risks like lack of sleep, poor eating practices, irrational outbursts, and social outcasts. Therefore, it is necessary to limit social media's exposure to today's young in order for it to be a useful instrument for effective learning. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Chapter 3 METHODOLOGY The research method employed, the sampling technique used, the instrument used for data collection, and the process that takes place for this research are all covered in this chapter. Research Design The researchers utilized a qualitative method to investigate the impact of the excessive use of social media on the learning process of Grade 11 Senior High School HUMSS students in Tanauan City Integrated High School. Qualitative research is a scientific way of gathering non-numerical data through observation. According to Bhandari (2020), qualitative research entails gathering and interpreting non-numerical data in order to comprehend concepts, opinions, or experiences. The study's research design is a descriptive research design. The purpose of descriptive research is to explain and systematically describe a situation, problem, phenomenon, and describe its characteristics. It collects data to answer a variety of what, when, and how questions about a certain population or group. As a result, observation and survey tools are frequently utilized to gather data. The researchers decided to employ a qualitative research method and a research descriptive design to obtain the results for the objectives of their study. Using this particular method and design, the researchers will be able to determine the students' opinions and the different aspects of social media and its impact on the learning process of students. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Sampling Tanauan City Integrated High School Grade 11 HUMSS Students participated in this study. A purposive sampling technique was used to select the participants. The purposive sampling technique was used based on our predetermined criteria of Grade 11 HUMSS Students whose interests are connected to our research. As stated by Nikolopoulou (2022), a collection of non-probability sampling strategies known as "purposive sampling" involve choosing units for your sample based on their possession of specific qualities. In other words, purposive sampling selects units "on purpose." Also termed judgmental sampling, this sampling strategy focuses on the researcher’s judgment when identifying and selecting the individuals, cases, or events that can provide the greatest information to accomplish the study’s objectives. The basic purpose of purposive sampling is to discover the examples, individuals, or groups, best suited to help you answer your research issue. Data Gathering Instrument This study's main objective was to ascertain how students' excessive usage of social media impacted their learning processes. The findings will be use as a foundation for the creation of activities or programs aimed at enhancing students' learning processes. The responses from the participants will be gathered via a survey questionnaire. The aforesaid tools will enable the researchers to gather information that responds to the questionnaire given at the beginning of the research. Evaluating the reliability and accuracy of the instrument that we will be utilized, will be given to a team of specialists for structural and content validation. This step is completed to make sure that the material's statements or substance are consistent and generate the responses necessary to respond to the questions. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Research Procedure Original questionnaire will be used to evaluate the aforementioned criteria to officially start the data collection process. The researcher first filed a letter of consent to the coordinator for the senior high school grade level before the process of data collection began. The researchers will distribute the instrument to the chosen participants after the letter has been accepted. In order to avoid confusion and misunderstandings, the respondents will be given thorough instructions and the study's purpose before they fill out the questionnaire. The instruments will be given out by hand. To ensure the respondents' safety in compliance with study ethics, the researcher adhered carefully to the prescriptions and health regulations. The principles of willingness to participate, privacy, anonymity, and confidentiality were upheld in this study. The statement of voluntary cooperation and informed consent summarizing the purpose of the study clearly states that participation in this study is purely voluntary. The students' confidentiality right must be maintained. The researchers should hold off on publicizing the respondents' confidential details. Since the respondent's identify won't be made public and codes will be given out, privacy will be observed. The findings of each survey will be kept secure and handled with the strictest secrecy. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Chapter 4 PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA This chapter reviews and discusses the findings and analysis of the qualitative data that have been acquired. The compilation of the provided questionnaire and the findings are also explored. SOP#1: How can students use social media in their lives and studies? In line with the study of Kabigting et al. (2021) the goal of their study is to evaluate how Grade 10 students' reported productivity relates to their use of social media. Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: the majority of respondents indicated daily, indicating that social media has been a part of respondents' lives in relation to their observance; the research demonstrated that social media significantly affected the student in terms of the number of hours, with 5 hours as the highest; social media is mostly used to communicate with others, hence the relationship between social media exposure and perceived productivity for home-based tasks was only modestly correlated with productivity of students performing home-based schoolwork. Students may become more efficient with their time when it comes to using social media and completing homework at home. Social media could be used to help kids write more effectively. Additionally, it could aid children in completing chores at home that call for communication. The findings of this study may be strengthened or refuted by more research. Rahman & Mithun (2021) stated that the findings of the current study make it clear that Bangladeshi university students' use of social media has a big impact on them. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Chapter 5 SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The recommendations and conclusions were based on the study's findings and summary, respectively. In this chapter, they are presented and discussed. Summary The current study looked into how Grade 11 HUMSS students at Tanauan City Integrated High School in the school year 2022-2023 were impacted by their excessive usage of social media. The major objectives of this paper are to: identify the effects of excessive social media use on students' learning; investigate the variables that lead students to use social media excessively; and propose measures to lessen the effects of excessive social media use and boost its positive effects. The researchers used a purposive sampling technique to identify 10 respondents among senior high school students at Tanauan City Integrated High School who were enrolled in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) academic strand. These students were given a survey questionnaire that included 6 main questions, each of which had an underlying sub-question. The researchers developed themes to provide each response from the selected respondents an interpretation. Excessive social media use can have both positive and negative effects on students' ability to learn. Most of the students revealed that social media has a beneficial effect on them because it makes it simple for them to learn new things and advance their knowledge. Others mentioned that social media has a real benefit for them, and most of them agreed. On the other hand, a small minority disagrees with the claim that social media neither aids in information gathering nor has a positive impact on learners' learning processes. The majority of students demonstrated that they lose focus as a result of using social media excessively, which suggests a negative impact. Students also stated that there are strategies for coping with these adverse effects. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Conclusion Along with the study's findings, the following conclusions were made: 1. Students can utilize social media to communicate with one another and even share knowledge in their everyday lives and academic pursuits. It has been discovered that students prefer using social media because it is useful and beneficial to them. 2. The students' learning process is shown to be negatively impacted by their excessive usage of social media, and they express concerns about losing the concentration they require to finish and complete their assigned assignments. 3. It has been discovered that social media has a variety of implications on students' learning processes, both positive and negative. Positively, students can get favorable results from social media for their educational process. On the downside, social media diverted their attention from their academic work. Practical Research 1 Department of Education Tanauan City Integrated High School-Senior High School Recommendations Based on the findings and conclusions, the researchers were able to come to the following recommendations: 1. Students must continue to communicate their ideas, gather the information they require, and use social media wisely and effectively, particularly when it comes to their studies and daily lives. 2. Students must limit their excessive use of social media and limit their use to what is necessary for their studies and the learning process. It means being willing to students to set boundaries for themselves. Additionally, they can develop strategies that will aid in strengthening their attention when utilizing social media. 3. Students can continue to use social media to enhance and support their educational process, but they should set limits to prevent abusing it to the point where their attention is drawn there. 4. The use of excessive social media by children can have a negative impact on their ability to learn. School officials can give activities that will involve students in learning about this.
