Week 5: Short Answers James Bell GNST 110: Online and Interdisciplinary Studies Mr. Clint Green Week 5 Short Answers The contents of Week 5 are very interesting, to say the least. The chapter addressed lots of different viewpoints from several cultures. These different cultures shape how people are the way they are. The different cultures have very different ways of how they may raise and or discipline their children. If I had to decide on two disciplines to give more understanding to the groups, I would choose Psychology and Sociology. Psychology involves studying human behavior, and also studies the brain and why people make certain decisions. I would choose Sociology because this is the study of social behavior and relationships. These two would be perfect for getting people much more information on why certain cultures partake in certain practices. It would also give the cultures a chance to learn from the others fairly well if these were the two categories chosen to give some perspective. This could also give a chance to get the child's perspective as well from a psychological and sociological standpoint. The film Ordinary People does a great job of evoking a lot of emotion from the viewer. As emotional as this is there are several ways to analyze this film. A religious scholar might not take very much of a liking to this film due to the fact that there are several “ungodly” depictions. For example, committing suicide in certain faiths is looked at as a sinful action. A psychiatrist might have a different outlook on this film. I believe that a psychiatrist would think that this is a great movie, and certain decisions that were made by everyone in the movie were due to trauma from Buck passing away. They would also probably like the fact that is Conrad receiving help from a psychiatrist. I’m not sure how a sociologist would view this film. I would think that they also would enjoy it though. I think they would also say a lot of the decisions that were made would be due to the social circumstances presented in the whole family situation. Overall this is a movie that evokes tons of emotion in a great storyline. I am writing this movie from the Hispanic point of view. This movie has a whole lot of issues. I do not like the fact that they would just abandon their child to a psychiatrist. Sure Conrad is having issues, but the issues of the family as a whole are much bigger. Conrad should’ve stayed at his home with his family so that they could’ve all grieved together as a family. This would’ve solved most of the problems. Also if Buck had a trusted authoritative figure with him, he wouldn't have lost his life. In my culture, we always make sure that there is a figure of authority to make sure things are going smoothly. I also condemn the actions of the mother. In my opinion and culture, the mother is taught to love and nurture no matter what. Overall this movie was good but could use some improvements.
