ACTIVITY #1 IN ETHICS
1. In your own understanding, explain the statement of Protagoras: “Man is the measure of
all things”
ANSWER:
Everything, according to Protagoras, is relative. What is meant by relative is that what
something seems to be depends purely on how man interprets it. Something is something because
that is how man decides to view it, despite of its true worth. And his view is frequently altered by
his surroundings and his experiences. It is commonly taken to suggest that the main constituent of
worth is the actual human person, rather than a deity or an unchangeable moral code. It also
implies that, while objective reality and objective truth may exist, they will be viewed and perceived
differently by every individual who encounters them.
2. Give an example of a statement that highlights subjectivity (or objectivity)
ANSWER:
 Bea prefer handwritten letters than chocolates. (Subjective)
 The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020.
(Objective)
3. Among the four dimensions of morality, which do you think should be given more
importance and why?
ANSWER:
In my own opinion, the one that I think should give more importance among the four
dimensions of morality is the action because when you did not act properly, domino effect will
happen – the three remaining dimensions will follow. Action is important because it affects the
whole. When we do a good or bad deed, it will reflect the whole entire being. That is why we need
to think clearly and properly before we do something. When considering morality, all that is
required is that the act be decent and performed with good intentions. The outcome of an activity
is beyond our control.
It is not sufficient that an act performed by us is moral; it should have been performed with
the moral or otherwise relies on the doer's purpose. Two persons may have done the same thing,
yet one's deed may be moral and the other's contradictory. Consider a man who feeds the poor out
of compassion and another who does the same but for the sake of gaining status or some other
selfish goal. Despite the fact that the actions are the same, one is moral and the other is not. The
reader should keep the distinction between non-moral and immoral in mind.
