In Teaching Science in the Elementary Grades “CHANGES THAT MATERIALS UNDERGO DUE TO PRESENCE OF OXYGEN AND HEAT” Prepared by: Ana Fernandez Submitted to : MARK STEPHEN A. RAVELAS Lesson Plan in Science Lesson 7: Changes that Materials Undergo due to the Presence of Oxygen and Heat (Grade 5) I. LEARNING OBJECTIVE At the end of the period, the pupils should be able to: 1. Identify the meaning of Combustion; 2. Classify the Presence and Absence of oxygen and; 3. Realize the changes in matter caused by heat. II. SUBJECT MATTER A. Topic: Changes that Materials Undergo due to the Presence of Oxygen and Heat B. Skills: Observing, realizing and Classifying C. Materials: Visual Aids, Pictures D. References: Module 4: Lesson 7 and Grade5 book’s . III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES Teacher’s Activity I. Student’s Activity Daily Routine :One student will lead the prayer a. Prayer :Let us all stand up and pray :Good morning ma’am b. Greetings : Good morning class! c. Classroom Management : Before we start, kindly pick up any pieces of trash on the floor and arrange your chairs. : Student’s will clean up and arrange the chair None Ma’am d. Checking attendance : Class secretary, is there any absent today? : That’s great, Thank you! II. Review : Before we proceed to our topic, can anyone remember our past lesson? : Can you give example of Harmful? III. : Our past lesson is titled “Changes that material undergoes: Useful and Harmful. : Very good class, it seems that you have mastered our lesson last time. : Rusting iron, leaching from decomposing matter and domestic wastes thrown into bodies of water releasing odor. Motivation : I will group you into two. Group 1 consists of 7members, and Group 2 has 6 members. This game called “Guess me” You will guess the picture on the board, and after that you will write your answer, and the jumbled letter I will give you, you will hold it and arrange it according to the answer you wrote on the board. You can create a yell so that I know if you are finish. The group that finishes first is the winner. :Yes we are ma’am : Are you ready class? (The students will participate) Group 1 “Burning “ Group 2 “Oxygen” : What do you think our topic is all about? : Changes that matter undergo due to presence of oxygen and heat. IV. Discussion : From the previous lesson, you have learned that matter has two properties, Physical and chemical. Both of these our properties have effects on matter. However our lesson will focus only on chemical property of matter. : Let us talk about first the absence of oxygen, but let’s define first what combustion is for you to better understand the absence of oxygen. : Combustion is a process of burning something which means for combustion to occur, three things must be present. : A fuel to be burned, a source of oxygen and a source of heat, and it is called fire triangle. : Is it clear class? : Again, what is combustion? : Now let’s talk about the Absence of oxygen or anaerobic. Now suppose that oxygen will be removed from fire triangle, what do you think will happen to fire produced? :Yes, ma’am : Combustion is a process of burning something : For example, The candle will cover a jar or glass . : The candle needs oxygen from the air to continue burning. If there is absence of oxygen, the candle will not continue burn. (Student will answer) : are you following class?? :Yes, ma’am : Now let’s talk about the Presence of Oxygen or aerobic. : Have you noticed that when your mother cuts fruits and vegetables, some of them change in color? :Yes ma’am : For example, When an apple is cut, the fleshy part of the fruit changes in color into brown. : why do you think the color of an apple changes color into brown? : because of oxygen : This is because the oxygen present in the air reacts with chemical present in the fleshy part of the apple. And because of Presence of Oxygen it will become brown. : It is clear class? : Great! Now let’s talk about the changes in matter through Application of Heat. : Do you have any idea what is heat? :Yes ma’am : Heat is the quality of being hot and it is described as how high temperature is. : Heat can bring about Physical changes in Matter. : For example is a melting ice when it is placed out of the refrigerator. The ice absorbs heat from the surroundings, which melt after a few : Students will answer minutes. : Heat does not only produced physical change in a material, sometimes heating a material cause it to undergo chemical changes. : The chemical changes caused by heat are irreversible. For example, the egg that our mother cooked for our breakfast has undergone chemical change by cooking. : Fried egg have undergone chemical change through heat. V. Generalization : Do you understand our lesson today? : Again, what is Combustion? : What will happen when we light up the candle and cover it with jar or glass? : What will happen to the fleshy part of the apple when we cut it? : I am glad that all of you learned our lesson. VI. Application : I will give an activity in which you will arrange the letter by which the question is asked. : Process of burning something -COMBUSTION : Quality of being hot -HEAT : Impossible to change back to previous condition -IRREVERSIBLE : Thank you for those students who participated for this activity. :Yes ma’am : Process of burning something. : The candle will not continue burn. : The fleshy part of apple changes color into brown. : Students will participate and answer. VII. Evaluation (The teacher provide a set of questions which will be answered via google form) VIII. Assignment In your notebook write your understanding about the Presence or Absence of oxygen. : The students will take the quiz via google form.
