● What do students already know?
● Open questions, checking prior knowledge, use a seed and a
real plant to encourage students to give suggestions about
how plants grow.
● Representation:
○ Watch a timelapse video of a seed growing
○ Create a class word bank of the key words with images as
necessary
○ Highlight relationships between a seed and a plant

Exploration
● Students grow beans in plastic cups with wet
kitchen paper. Students choose where to place
their cup and how often to water it (warm place,
cold place, dark place, light place, etc).
● Let students talk about their observations in their
own words.
● Representation:
○ Record words used to describe observations in
English and Spanish

Explanation
● Explain, using the correct scientific terms, what
has happened to each of the seeds.
● Representation:
○ Use visuals from the experiment to help show
meaning.
○ Use images of the parts of the plant
○ Translate words from the previous stage as
necessary

● Creation of a seed journal, drawing or short video
where students explain what happened using the
correct scientific terms.
