First, African Americans should not receive reparations because everyone’s tax bills
would increase. In order to fund the reparations for all African Americans, the government
would have to college higher taxes from every citizen, including African Americans. Most
people would have more taxes taken out of their weekly pay checks. For instance, Mary’s
check would decrease by $40. Over the span of one month, her take home pay would be
approximately $160 less than before. Furthermore, some people who normally get a refund
at the end of the year will end up having to pay money to the government in order to
reimburse the African Americans. Most working-class American rely on tax refunds at the
end of the fiscal year. These refunds come after all federal income taxes have been paid. If
the government were to create an additional tax, one to fund the repayment to African
Americans, then these working-class Americans could expect a decrease in these muchneeded refunds. Therefore, the increased tax burden is a primary reason African Americans
should not receive reparations.
