Course Description:
The course will provide an opportunity for students to appreciate gerontology as a specialty care
area to safeguard & promote the welfare of elderly clients. Various factors impacting the quality
of life will be discussed to plan the care for elderly clients. Students will be prepared to
demonstrate the core competencies including health assessment, communication; health
promotion, rehabilitation, nutrition and prevention of falls and injuries in caring for elderly
clients. In addition spirituality of elderly clients, ethical, legal and cultural dimensions of care
will also be emphasized in the course.
Course Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the essential concepts and theories of aging
2. Identify and asses the needs of elderly in geographical context based on culture, religion
and resources
3. Demonstrate key competencies in caring for elderly clients including:

4. Apply the knowledge of physiological, psychological, socioeconomic, and spiritual
domains of care in gerontology.
5. Apply measures of rehabilitation to enhance functional abilities of elderly clients
6. Apply the learnt concepts while dealing with care givers of elderly.
7. Utilize the ethical and legal considerations while caring for elderly clients

Practicum objectives:
By the end of clinical rotation, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the special needs of elderly population with reference to physical, psychological,
spiritual and economic dimensions.
2. Provide safe and individualized care to elderly clients
3. Demonstrate the principles of therapeutic communication while dealing with elderly
clients and their care-givers.
4. Address significant concern/s of the care givers while dealing with elderly population.
5. Integrate “readiness to change and motivation theory” while caring for elderly clients.
6. Apply nursing process in caring for elderly clients.
7. Provide culturally sensitive and realistic care/teaching to elderly clients and their
caregivers
8. Collaborate with members of the health care team/other stakeholders to promote and
maintain optimum wellness of elderly clients.
