LEGALIZATION OF ABORTION CATCHY HOOK: For over a century abortion has been criminalizes here in the Philippines through the penal code of 1870 under the Spanish colonial rule and it has been incorporated into the revised penal code of 1930 and it’s been criminalized for a good reason. It has always been a fact that life begins at a conception which basically means abortion is equal to murder which makes them violate to human right laws. And yet promoting abortion is basically promoting that life is easily disposable. THESIS STATEMENT: Irresponsibility would lead to more unwanted pregnancies, and the rate of abortion would soar up. Proponents of a legal abortion feel there are instances when a pregnancy puts the life of the mother in danger and should, therefore, be terminated. Opponents, on the other hand, look at the issue from a moral and a religious point of view. They argue that life is sacred and God-given. Only God can take away life and not a human being. For these religious-oriented thinkers, life begins at conception, and the fetus should be viewed as a human being with a right to life. ISSUE: Abortion should not be legalized. PEOPLE CONCERNED IN THE ISSUE: Pregnant women. RELEVANCE OF THE ISSUE: Recently, there are many controversial topics in this world, and abortion is one of them. It was not a big problem before; however, recently the number of abortions increases rapidly. In some countries, abortion is legalized; nevertheless, I strongly disagree with this idea. I believe that abortion should be illegal. In this essay, I'll show my opinions why I don't agree with abortion. First, everyone should have responsibility for their behavior. Some people think that abortion is an easy way to avoid having a baby. Therefore, they mate whenever they want. And after that, if they notice a pregnancy, they'll go to the hospital. It sounds very easy; however, it sounds that they lack responsibility for their behavior to me. Abortion means to kill a new life and to endanger a woman's body. It seems that people who have an abortion easily think the fetus is just a "thing." If they don't want to have a baby, there are ways to avoid having a baby before pregnancy. Therefore, to rely on just abortion means they don't have any responsibility. Second, as I mentioned before, abortion is dangerous for a woman's body. Recently, many people try to have an abortion; thus, it causes misunderstanding. Abortion is not the easy way that people think. It's possible that a woman can't have a baby anymore because it hurts the woman's body. Besides, it's possible that women die because of it. Unfortunately, many people don't know the reality. From my point of view, it's because of the lack of education about abortion. The women who are pregnant don't know what abortion does to their body. Third, the baby, whether he/she is born or not, has the right to live. Who can say that the baby has no hope? It's possible that the baby can have a better life than ours. We don't have any right to kill a newborn baby. Moreover, I think only human beings do abortion. Humans are the only animals that kill their babies intentionally. DEVELOPMENT OF ARGUMENT CLAIM 1: ABORTION IS IMMORAL. EVIDENCE: Abortion is WRONG. It is wrong to kill. You can never ever justify killing anyone especially those innocent lives. It’s not right to take a life of someone who would have experienced something wonderful such as life. Abortion is against the constitution the intention of the laws basic laws of the land do not allow abortion. It is also against the law of God. CLAIM 3: SOME DEFENDERS OF ABORTION WILL CONCEDE THE SCIENTIFIC PROOFS BUT WILL ARGUE THAT THE ENTITY IN THE WOMB IS STILL NOT, OR NOT YET, A “PERSON". EVIDENCE: If the science on when life begins is clear, why do some organizations claim that “pregnancy” doesn’t begin until a week later, at implantation? “Not a person” is a decidedly unscientific argument: it has nothing to do with science and everything to do with someone’s own moral and political philosophy, though that someone may not readily admit it. We’re either persons or property; and even the staunchest abortion defender will be reluctant to call a human child a piece of property. CLAIM 3: IF THEY CAN’T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OF THEIR SEXUAL LIFE, ABORTION IS UNNECESSARY. EVIDENCE: Let me tell you what, each teenager and adults have access to safe sex protection, condoms and contraceptives, it’s totally the responsible of the person who’s going to use that to prevent having a child. So, which make abortion unnecessary unless if the person is responsible. There are many ways that abortion can be prevented. Many ways that human rights laws that cannot be violated. Many ways that we are not able to take a child’s life. All of this is totally the responsibility of a person and yet the government has even issued of having sex educations to students and yet teenage pregnancy is still a problem today. It is not law it is totally about the person’s responsibility. If they can’t take responsibility of their sexual life, abortion is unnecessary. REFUTING OPPOSING ARGUMENTS Opposing Arguments 1: HOW ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE WITHOUT FINANCE? HOW ABOUT THOSE UNPRIVILEGED PEOPLE? Answer: Let me tell you what, each teenager and adults have access to safe sex protection, condoms and contraceptives, it’s totally the responsible of the person who’s going to use that to prevent having a child. To address the issue of unprivileged women who can’t afford family planning, it is imperative that family planning is made accessible to all. Given the current socioeconomic and demographic indicators in poor countries and the slow progress in the last decade, four critical steps should be undertaken: (i) increase knowledge about the safety of family planning methods; (ii) ensure contraception is genuinely affordable to the poorest families; (iii) ensure supply of contraceptives by making family planning a permanent line item in healthcare system's budgets and (iv) take immediate action to remove barriers hindering access to family planning methods. Opposing Arguments: A FETUS IS NOT A LIFE/PERSON YET. Answer: This is what I like to call the argument from ignorance'. The answer to this as all those who were listening in biology class will tell you, is that there are four criteria that science requires to establish biological life metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli and reproduction. And a fertilized egg has all of them. The new human zygote has a genetic composition that is absolutely unique to itself, different from any other human that has ever existed, including that of its mother (thus disproving the claim that what is involved in abortion is merely “a woman and her body). CONCLUSION Restatement: Throughout these past years, people had been protesting these days regarding to their rights as a woman. Some says abortion must be legalized due to high numbers of teenage pregnancy, an increase cases of rapes, and financial problems. Some might say a fetus is just a "Thing", a thing that hasn't even had time to develop enough. We are spreading awareness to women and girls from accessing an abortion to prevent a risk to their physical and emotional health. Abortion is morally wrong because it involves terminating life prematurely. If indeed, life is given by God, the human beings have no power to terminate it bud God himself. If every woman. Is sanitized and made aware of how bad procuring an abortion is abortion more likely to reduce. Men equally should be responsible; they should accept and bear responsibility in case they make a woman pregnant. Good ethics should be the principal guide in our life, and the same for everybody. Description of the Issue: The termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus. GROUP 2 MEMBERS: Akyssha Riesel A.
