Introduction

stressful circumstance such as a pitch meeting, find a quiet place and spend two minutes in a

Speaking Skills
1. Speaking Skill 1 – Use a story example
Minutes 2:33 “For example, Nalini Ambady, a researcher at Tufts University, shows that
when people watch 30-second soundless clips of real physician-patient interactions, their
judgments of the physician's niceness predict whether or not that physician will be sued”.
Amy Cuddy use a story example to give the audience general explanation from the
perspective of the audience and want to show the results for the story to them.
2. Speaking Skill 2 - Explain words and terms
Minutes 4:01 “And what are nonverbal expressions of power and dominance? Well, this
is what they are. So in the animal kingdom, they are about expanding. So you make
yourself big, you stretch out, you take up space, you're basically opening up. It’s about
opening up. And this is true across the animal kingdom. It’s not just limited to primates.
And humans do the same thing”.
Amy Cuddy explain words and terms nonverbal expressions of power and dominance to
clarify and to make known in detail about the concepts behind the words and terms that
have been used in the talk.
3. Speaking Skill 3 - Give reasons
Minutes 2:09 “And there’s a lot of reason to believe that this is a valid way to look at this.
So social scientists have spent a lot of time looking at the effects of our body language, or
other people's body language, on judgments. And we make sweeping judgments and
inferences from body language. And those judgments can predict really meaningful life
outcomes like who we hire or promote, who we ask out on a date.
Amy Cuddy use this speaking skills which is give reasons because she want to provide an
explanation of something to make sure the audience can understand about body language
precisely.
Presentation Skills
1. Presentation Skill 1 - Pause effectively
Minutes 1:43 “So a handshake, or the lack of a handshake, can have us talking for weeks
and weeks and weeks”.
Amy Cuddy use pause effectively because she want audience have enough time to
process what she have just said. She also want the audience to reflect on what she have
said.
2. Presentation Skill 2 - Use body language effectively

Amy Cuddy show an example on how she hug herself because she want to show audience
what most people do when they feel powerless and lack of self-confidence.
3. Presentation Skill 3 – Repetition and rephrasing

Amy Cuddy use rephrasing because she want to summarize her idea and make sure the
audience understand her better. Rephrasing also will make the audience know the topic
well.
