Studying Rizal: From Course
Work to Fieldwork
According to Rafael, the Noli Me Tangere both depicts how the friars maintained the
colonial hierarchy by withholding access to Latin and Spanish from the vast majority of
Filipinos and illustrates the Filipinos nonetheless managed to produce new and destabilizing
meanings from the language ang religion of their colonizers.
When she set off for the Philippines to conduct anthropological fieldwork, she did not
expect new encounters with Rizal, the novelist since she planned to spend the bulk of her
time outside university settings.
While she had been fully prepared for the eclipse of Rizal, the novelist by Rizal the hero,
she simultaneously expected to encounter another aspect of the man: Rizal the myth.
