In instances like this asking the speaker to say it again can prove the difference between understanding a crucial piece of information or spending the rest of the day trying to figure out just what was said. So that you can get a feel for the language and tune your ear, let’s learn the phrase “once again 3 please” and use it over and over! “Once again please” is marra 'ukhra min faDlik. ()ﻣﺮة أﺧﺮى ﻣﻦ ﻓﻀﻠﻚ. The first word marra ( )ﻣﺮةmeans “time” as in “one more time” or “another time.” This is followed by 'ukhra ()أﺧﺮى, which translates into “again” in this expression and sometimes it is used to mean “another”. In Moroccan Arabic, “slowly please” is bshwiya min faDlik ()ﺑﺸﻮﻳﺔ ﻣﻦ ﻓﻀﻠﻚ. The first word bshwiya ( )ﺑﺸﻮﻳﺔmeans “slowly.” This is followed by min faDlik ()ﻣﻦ ﻓﻀﻠﻚ, which is “please” as we learned before. So to recap here, we have bshwiya min faDlik ( )ﺑﺸﻮﻳﺔ ﻣﻦ ﻓﻀﻠﻚand literally this means “slowly please.” Another option you can use is “What did you say?” which in Standard Arabic is maadha qult? ( )ﻣﺬا ﻗﻠﺖ؟for men and maadha qulti? ( )ﻣﺬا ﻗﻠﺘﻲ؟for women. The first word maadha ( )ﻣﺬاmeans “what.” This is followed by 4 qult ( )ﻗﻠﺖor qultii ( )ﻗﻠﺘﻲwhich literally means “you said” in the masculine and feminine forms respectively. So to recap here, we have maadha qult / qultii? which literally means “what you said?” or “what did you say?” Cultural Insight In more casual situations such as among friends or when shopping or dining, you can use shnu qultii? ( )ﺷﻨﻮ ﻗﻠﺘﻲ؟which means "what did you say?" in Moroccan Arabic. shnu ( )ﺷﻨﻮis "what" and qulti ( )ﻗﻠﺘﻲis "you said." You can use this expression to address both a man and a woman even if the verb qulti is grammatically in the feminine form. To sound more polite, even if you're talking casually, you can add the word smaH lii ()اﺳﻤﺢ ﻟﻲ, meaning "I'm sorry" to the expression we've just learned. You can say smaH lii, shnu qulti?
