Weaving
How do we weave?
Weaving throughout
History
The origin and development of woven
cloth is closely tied to the history of
mankind. Thousands of years ago we
developed the skills necessary to turn
the raw materials around us into cloth
for clothing and shelter.
Weaving, the lacing together of threads
and yarns to form cloth has developed
over thousands of years of discovery
and experimentation. Coarse fabric,
made from grasses and leaves, was the
first step toward the development of
the textiles we use today.
Different types of Weave
Weaving was probably invented
much later than spinning, around
6000 BC, in West Asia. At first
people just wove narrow bands with
their fingers, and it was only later
that they began to use looms.
