The Hartford Convention resulted in a declaration calling on the Federal Government to protect New England and to supply financial aid to New England's badly battered trade economy. 3. What was the Embargo Act of 1807? Why is it important? The banning of all U.S trade with England and france. The embargo failed and smuggler merchants started illegally trading with France and England, and Jefferson increased the military size to control the illegal trading. 4. What was the Second Great Awakening? What denominations grew from it? The second great awakening was a period of time where religion was a great aspect of things, revivals of religion, of protestant christianity spread everywhere. Some denominations such as evangelical churches and the churches of christ. 5. What was the era of Good Feelings? It was an increase of nationalism. Popular presidency as well, booming national economy. 6. Discuss the differences in political ideologies of Adams and Jefferson. Jefferson, a republican, wanted power to be kept in the states and wanted the economy to be farming based. Adams, a federalist, wanted the economy to be based off of industrialism and he preferred power in the national government. 7. Name and discuss some of the significant events of Thomas Jefferson’s presidency. Marbury vs Madison was big because it was one of Jefferson's first moves as president, and he had the court rule in his favor. The Louisiana purchase acquired a mass amount of land for new settlers to move into and expand america. The 1807 embargo, which was met with illegal trading with England and france. 8. What were the causes of the War of 1812? What were the results? Impressment, meaning England and France was basically stealing our merchants and using them, they've violated free trade, and none of the attempts beforehand seemed to be working. England didn't want the war to go on for very long since they were at war with France and the made the treaty of ghent, though it really didn't address the needed concerns, such as trade policies. 9. Who was John Marshall and why is he significant to our nation’s history? John Marshall was a justice on the supreme court and dealt with many important cases among our nation's government which allowed people to see what constitutional and unconstitutional things were. He dealt with state court rulings as well and helps protect american citizens rights 10. Explain Marbury vs. Madison and why it was a significant Supreme Court ruling. Basically adams tried to fill a bunch of jobs with his remaining time in office and the letters for the news made it out in time, however as jefferson was filling the next term, he wanted to input people of his own party, so he basically told the justice that is was unconstitutional for marbury to fill the seat adams had appointed him and the judge agreed, ruling in jefferson's favor. 11. Explain McCulloch vs. Maryland and why it was a significant Supreme Court ruling. The Supreme Court ruled that Congress had implied powers under the Necessary and Proper Clause of Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution to create the Second Bank of the United States and that the state of Maryland lacked the power to tax the Bank. 12. Explain Gibbons vs. Ogden and why it was a significant Supreme Court ruling. Gibbons was sued by Ogden for violating the monopoly given to him. Gibbons appealed to the US Supreme Court when New York's state court found in Ogden's favor. In a unanimous decision, the Court ruled that where state and federal laws on interstate commerce conflict, federal laws are superior. 13. List and explain four main points of the Monroe Doctrine. The United States would not interfere with European affairs. the United States recognized and would not interfere with existing colonies in the Americas. The western hemisphere was closed to future colonization. If Europeans tried to interfere with any nations around their borders they'd be met with force. 14. How did changes in transportation encourage Westward Expansion? Cities will need to be built, when people move, new markets need to be built around their area. Access to new farm lands, freshwater, trains 15. What was the Missouri Compromise? Explain the conditions of the Compromise. The missouri compromise was where it was a play to keep balance within the nations when it came to slavery. Maine broke away to become a free state(one without slaves) and missouri became a slaves state, which is when the 36, 30 line was created. And salvery was outlawed above that line. 16. What was the corrupt bargain? Basically Clay used his influence to give Adams an upper hand knowing he'd benefit, by being made secretary of state. 17. What is universal male suffrage and how did this contribute to Andrew Jackson becoming President? It was basically an act that made it so any white male of 21 with or without property could vote, which allowed Jackson, a more common like man, to be voted in by the common like people. 18. How did Jackson’s victory change American politics? Jackson was basically an underdog, he showed the American people that any man could become president no matter his background. He was also a war hero. 19. What was the spoils system? Jackson gave government positions to unqualified people who shared his beliefs and political views. 20. How did Jackson feel about the Bank of the United States? What did he do and what was the result? He was suspicious of the bill and when the renewal charter was passed in congress he vetoed the bill 21. Describe the nullification crisis and how that contributed to the sectional divide in the United States 22. How did Andrew Jackson contribute to the Trail of Tears? Jackson signed the Indian removal act of 1830 which made all natives relocate to west of the mississippi. 23. Why did Americans living in Texas go to war with Mexico? The american refused to abide by mexican law, convert to catholicism, wouldnt accept the ban on slavery, and they wanted a voice in the mexican government. 24. Why was the Battle of the Alamo so significant? Mexican troops killed the entire army that fought in the battle of the alamo. 25. What was the result of the Texas revolution against Mexico? Texan gained their independence after capturing Santa anna. 26. How did the US gain access to the Oregon Territory? Britain and america split oregon and oregon became a free state since texas became a slave state. 27. Who did they acquire it from? They acquired it from england. 28. Why did Mexico and the US go to war? The borders were still yet to be determined after 9 years before Texas was annexed. 29. What was the result? The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ceded america, Texas all the way to the Rio Grande river. 30. What did the US gain? They gained all of Texas and soon after they gained the Gadsden for 10 million dollars.
