CPP JCM SPS EAA CSR DBT JM SAN JOSE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GENERAL ACADEMIC Exclusion of Filipino Subject and Its Predictive Effects on Learner’s State of Nationalism PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1 vi Second Semester, S. Y. 2018-2019 ABSTRACT This study entitled “EXCLUSION OF FILIPINO SUBJECT AND ITS PREDICTIVE EFFECTS ON LEARNER’S STATE OF NATIONALISM” was conducted to determine the predictive effects of the removal of Filipino and Panitikan subjects on the state of nationalism of the learners. The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) proposed a memorandum with regards to the exclusion of Filipino subject in college level. Under the CHEd’s memorandum Order No.20 Series of 2013 also known as “General Education Curriculum Holistic Understandings, Intellectual and Civic Competencies”, the removal of Filipino and Panitikan as the core subjects in college made to reduce the General Education Curriculum (GEC) to a minimum of 36 units. Nevertheless, many advocates manifested their opposition to the public especially to the Supreme Court as part of the reason why they hold the issue. This is a qualitative research that includes the use of face to face interview of five (5) GA 11 and 12 students of San Jose National Senior High School, five (5) college students and two (2) professors from Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng San Pablo and two (2) high school teachers from San Jose National High School. There were fourteen (14) sets of interviews done and each participant has the opportunity to answer the questions the researchers have prepared for them. The interview questions where aimed at eliciting relevant information concerning to the exclusion of the said subjects in college education. Specifically, the research design this study used was discourse analysis searching for an in-depth knowledge about the exclusion of the said subjects in general college curriculum within San Pablo City proper. SAN JOSE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GENERAL ACADEMIC Exclusion of Filipino Subject and Its Predictive Effects on Learner’s State of Nationalism PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1 vii Second Semester, S. Y. 2018-2019 The study found out that out of fourteen (14) Filipinos, nine (9) of them were not in favor on the CHEd’s memo. They had this big stand that it is prerequisite for Filipinos to know their native language. In this generation where everything was modernized, culture is being refined and neglected. The said memorandum will make the future generation to no longer take the national language as the core of their identity. They would also forget the essence of what heroes did for the country but some Filipinos greatly now believe in globalization and internalization that’s why they are in favor in CHEd’s memo. Considering the answers of the participants, majority of them did not agreed with CHEd’s memorandum, but somehow there are still some who agreed. Therefore, Filipinos still wanted to preserve and nurture the culture, tradition and most especially the linguistic approach of the country. On the other hand, Filipinos still want to have a deep understanding about the Filipino itself not just in their country but also internationally. They believe that all Filipinos must acquire the mastery of language according to its structure since there is always confusion on the proper use of language showing no development with the application of what student’s learned from Filipino subject. The researchers recommended that the CHEd’s decision should not be a threat on Filipinos culture and identity nor would it not affect the job opportunities offered globally, teachers should give assurance that they will teach the Filipino subjects clearly and efficiently, students must master the lessons in Filipino subjects within the capacity of time given to them and parents should show to their children the realization that the Filipino language must be treasured.
