CASE STUDY Problem Statement: Design a network for an organization using the
concepts of Addressing (IP Address Assignment)
Case study title

institution, type of learners
and learning environment in
which the activity/ies took place]
Intended outcome(s)
[Describe the objective(s)
behind the practice outlined
here]
Network Design for Organization using concepts of Addressing
Designing an IPv4 Addressing Scheme
This section gives an overview IPv4 addressing to aid you in
designing an IPv4 addressing plan. The IPv4 address is a 32-bit
number that uniquely identifies a network interface on a
system. An IPv4 address is written in decimal digits, divided
into four 8-bit fields that are separated by periods. Each 8-bit
field represents a byte of the IPv4 address.
Unique IPv4 addresses for the interfaces of every system on
the network. The number of potential systems on your
network. A network address always points to host/node/
server or it can represent a whole network.
The challenge [Identify the
issues that required attention or
which prompted you to reassess
your previous practice]
A common situation in most organizations where the roles are
separated and the one managing the servers will have little to
no say in the design, layout or overall management of the
network itself. Splitting up the network into subnets. The
eventual exhaustion of the IPv4 address space.
Established practice [Identify
features of the practice
previously in use - this may
include any aspects which were
subsequently amended]
IP addressing provides mechanism to differentiate between
hosts and network. Because IP addresses are assigned in
hierarchical manner, a host always resides under a specific
network. The host which needs to communicate outside its
subnet needs to know destination network address, where the
packet/data is to be sent.
The advantage [Describe the
benefits of the addition or
amendment of an element of
network, as experienced by
practitioners and/or the
institution as a whole]
There is a direct relationship between the value of the Internet
and the number of sites connected to the Internet. As the
Internet grows, the value of each site's connection to the
Internet increases because it provides the organization with
access to an ever expanding user/customer population. IP
address is an address having information about how to reach a
specific host, especially outside the LAN.
Key points for effective
practice [Briefly identify the
most important points in the
case study for other
practitioners– these may include
risks as well as benefits]
The IP address is a familiar term for most computer users. An
IP address is the unique numerical address of a device in a
computer network that uses Internet Protocol for
communication. The IP address allows you to pinpoint a
particular device from the billions of devices on the Internet. In
the same sense, one computer needs the IP address of another
computer to communicate with it.
Conclusions and
recommendations [A summary of
how and why the practice
outlined here has been effective]
For components to communicate on a network, each needs a
unique address. For computer networks using the Internet. To
make efficient use of IP addresses we also need logical
groupings of devices. Think of the Internet Protocol as simply
the rules of communication.
