You have discovered a MAGICAL substance called UNICORN MILK. It is NOT the milk from unicorns but rather the desired treat used to attract these magical beasts. This is a highly rare substance and should be handled with caution. Unicorns are gentle creatures and as such they dislike applying any kind of force to the milk. Essential question: Which percentage of soap allows you to create unicorn milk the fastest? PLANNING THE EXPERIMENT Three soap water solutions will be tested during this experiment in order to make unicorn milk. Solution 1 Solution 2 Solution 3 100% soap 50% soap 0% soap Predict which of the three solutions would make unicorn milk the fastest (first solution to have the food color touch the sides) You MUST write in complete sentences. PROCEDURE 1. Pour 15 mL of milk into the petri dish to completely cover the bottom and allow it to settle. 2. Add 2 drops of each of two different colors to the milk. Make sure you drop the colors in the same place for each trial. 3. Have a stopwatch ready 4. As you dip the cotton swab into the soap solution, say “Start”, and as soon as you see the colors reach the outer edge of the petri dish, say “Stop.” Do not stir the milk with the cotton swab. When dipping the cotton swab, dip and leave the swab in the petri dish until the “stop” time. 5. Record your data in your data table Time taken to make Unicorn milk with various soap solutions (Quantitative Data) Time in Solution FINAL RESULT Sketch seconds (sec) Qualitative Observations 100% soap 50% soap 0% soap RESEARCH Read and annotate the information below. Use it to write your CER for the Unicorn Milk Report. A good CER uses already existing research in the Reasoning portion of the CER to help explain your experimental results. You are free to read more about the concepts explained below online or in your own research. However, it is not required. Milk is mostly water, but it also contains fat. The fat in milk is sensitive to changes when other solutions are introduced to it. The secret of the bursting colors is the chemistry of that tiny drop of soap. Dish soap weakens the chemical bonds that hold the fats together in a milk solution. When soap is mixed with water, the water allows the soap to attach to and move the fat globules in the milk. This is when the fun begins. The fat globules in the milk bend, roll, twist, and contort in all directions as the water/soap mixture races around to join up with the fat molecules. During all of this fat molecule gymnastics, the food coloring molecules are bumped and shoved everywhere, providing an easy way to observe the color spreading. As the water/soap mixture becomes evenly mixed with the milk, the action slows down and eventually stops. Works Cited "At Home Science Experiments: Color Changing Milk." Scholastic.
