Five important points from the reading: 1. One important point that was made in the reading, was that there is an eight statement test that can be used to assess the amount of satisfaction that you have in your life. After you take the test, you can add up the numbers and find your answer based on the neophilia scale. 2. Another key point from the reading is that younger people have more neophilia, due to the current world that we are growing up in now. Things have changed from even just a decade ago. The neophilia scale has no right or wrong answers, and everyone has a different answer or point of view for each question, which is what makes the world unique. 3. A third key point from our reading is that throughout their lives, humans must change to adapt to their new environment in order to be successful. The world is a lot different todat than 200 years ago, and a big reason for that is because we have adapted as a society to fit our new societal standards. 4. A fourth crucial point in our reading is about how in major industries now, you cannot rely on just one person to keep everything running. You must have many different people, all who have their own areas of expertise, in order to keep everything functioning smoothly. Businesses have many different logistical angles that must be dealt with by many other people who all specialize in certain areas. 5. The last important point from the reading was that the concept of something being boring (tedium), was not invented until the industrial revolution. After boredom was more common, things such as movie theatres, radio, and television were created. This helped to combat boredom. This is an example of society evolving to fit current needs. More recently in the twentieth century, social media has been created and popularized to combat boredom, as well as ease communication. Two ideas that made me stop and think while reading: 1. One idea that made me stop and think was when the reading mentioned our individual version’s way of R&D. I stopped to reminisce on all of the times during college thus far in my own life that I have stopped to talk to new people and spark new friendships. We do many of these things without a second thought, such as looking for a new job while we are already employed. Our individual R&D made me stop to think about all of the examples that take place in my personal life. 2. Another idea that made me stop and think while reading was when the text started discussing dopamine. I find neural related things to be very interesting. The fact that dopamine can carry your signals of pleasures is very interesting to me. Dopamine can relate to our current society, that those levels in their bodies are what control their pleasure. If everyone had low dopamine levels, then society would usually be unhappy. This topic relates to my own life, because my dopamine levels change throughout the day, and after a different event takes place.
