Student meeting with Higher Learning Committee. Minot State University will host members of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) for a two-day site visit as part of its Assurance Argument. Monday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 12. HLC decides on the accreditation of Minot State University, which is crucial to the institution. Tuesday, April 12, 3:00 PM, Aleshire Theater. Hartnett Hall, Discussion Rising out of Hatred Eli Saslow, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and author of RISING OUT OF HATRED, will present his experience interviewing Derek Black. Derek is the godson of the former grand wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, David Duke. As a teenager, Derek was a prominent leader of the youth White Nationalist movement. However, after his formative college experience, Derek renounced white supremacy. This event will explore the rise of white nationalism and political polarization in contemporary America and point toward overcoming divisions and hatred. The event will include 5-minute opening remarks by Salsow followed by a moderated question and answer session. Participants at Minot State should have read the book Rising Out of Hatred, and will come prepared with questions. Copies of the book are available for loan from MSU Staff Senate, VPAA, VPSA or the University Diversity Council. The campus Barnes and Nobel bookstore also has copies available for purchase. Friday, April 15, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM Student Leadership Summit The Student Leader Summit will be held on Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. This event is intended to prepare and inspire incoming and returning student for leadership roles within campus organizations at Minot State University. The schedule will feature guest speakers, break-out workshops, individual and group strength assessments, team building and much more! Breakfast and lunch are included. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day! This event is free-of-charge and designed for all student leaders – club officers, members, or those interested in future leadership roles. While we encourage clubs to attend as a group, students are welcome to attend independently as well. Student leaders can sign up HERE by April 15. Tuesday April 19, and Wednesday, April 20, 6:30 PM, Aleshire Theater, Hartnett Hall Shakespeare Fest. Travelling Shakespearians pulled off the road to check a wheel, only to find that we need a new bearing for the axle and new dates for our festival at Minot State University. Shakespeare Fest will be held on campus Tuesday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 20. As a prelude to Shakespeare Fest, student groups will be doing flash Shakespeare on campus, showing up spontaneously at different locations and performing scenes. A movie will be shown each night beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a short contest before each showing, prizes, and a brief discussions about what to look for as you watch the movie. Thursday, April 21, 10:30 AM-1:30 PM Atrium Administration Building Look at the posters, talk to the participants, and report. MSU’s Annual Research Poster Session event will be held on Thursday, April 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the MSU Student Center Atrium. Since the previous two poster session events were cancelled due to COVID-19, the 2022 event will include a combination of 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 Small Grants for Faculty Research awardees Friday April 22, 3:00 PM-9:00 PM, Saturday April 22, 10:00 AM-9:00 PM Pow Wow (Native American Cultural Celebration) in the Dome. Go to the Pow Wow, you may also volunteer HERE. Attend for an hour. It is best if you come at 7:00 PM on Friday or Saturday or on 1:00 PM on Saturday during the Grand Entry. A powwow is a celebration of life, a honoring, a gathering with drums and dancers. We will honor our graduates and their families with dance, song, and gifts. Wednesday, April 27, 7:00 North West Arts center (Below the library). Discussion Who should decide what gets taught in public schools? The next Campus and Community Dialogues event will debate this question on Wednesday, April 27 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Northwest Arts Center. Panelists include Chelsie Hultz, Minot State professor and curriculum planner; Kolette Kramer, constitutional freedom activist; and Mark Vollmer, Minot Public Schools superintendent. On Thursday, April 28, the No Excuse for Abuse Red Run Event will begin at 12 p.m., noon, in the Quad. April is Sexual Assault Month and provides an opportunity for everyone to take action in preventing sexual violence. This year, Student Activities, Residence Life, the Wellness Center, and Title IX will host the event. Please consider competing and/or cheering on your favorite competitor. Each member will "run" in heels provided at the event and take part in Minute to Win It games against their competition. Each participant will have an opportunity to win prizes and food will be provided for faculty, staff, and students at the event with presentation of an MSU ID.
